Allison “Allie” Grant (formerly Parks) is a recurring character who was introduced in Season 6 of When Calls the Heart. She is portrayed by Jaeda Lily Miller.
Background[]
Allie was born in autumn 1904 to Colleen and Dylan Parks. Her mother died when Allie was only four years old and her father left her shortly thereafter. Her uncle, Nathan Grant, took guardianship of her. Allie and Nathan's constant moving around due to his work made it hard for her to make friends. Allie was told she resembled her mother in looks[1] and personality. Nathan described her as being "bull-headed and independent.” Allie was a smart girl but had a stubborn streak and sometimes did not listen to her uncle. One of her favorite activities was fishing. Due to the loss of her mother, she looked to Elizabeth Thornton as a maternal figure. She had trouble making friends at first, but soon developed a number of friendships. Allie excelled in math, science, and reading.
Storyline[]
Season 6[]
Arrival in Hope Valley[]
Allie came to Hope Valley at 10 years old with her uncle and guardian, Constable Nathan Grant. She was first introduced in season 6 episode 5, and first interacted with Sheriff Bill Avery. She even skipped school on her first day in Hope Valley, and ended up in the Queen of Hearts saloon where Lucas Bouchard taught her a card trick to break the ice with her new classmates. Afterwards, rather than go to school, she went fishing.
Issues at School[]
At school, Allie performed the card trick Lucas taught her, collecting items from many students. Allie was made to give everything back, and was talked to by Elizabeth Thornton, and her uncle Nathan.[2] During another school day, Allie was part of a group project with three other girls, but decided to complete the whole math assignment on her own. Although she got each question right, Elizabeth reminded her that it was meant to be a group project and that the other girls could have used her help. As a result of Allie's difficulties integrating into school, Elizabeth asked Nathan to come to the school for a meeting. After learning Allie's history, Elizabeth concluded that Allie tended to push people away out of fear of getting close to anyone who she might lose. The following school day, Elizabeth saw Allie reading alone at recess and encouraged her to try to make friends with the other children. During math class, Allie helped Opal complete a math problem.[3]
Making Friends[]
Nathan urged Allie to spend time with the other children in town, but she was reluctant. She joined her classmates to help Elizabeth set up the new town library. While they worked on arranging the books, she told the other children she knew the location of a real haunted house at Frenchman's Creek. When Harper, Opal, and Robert came to see it, Allie scared them away with a creaky rocking chair. She followed them and saw that Opal had injured her arm, so she stayed by her side until Elizabeth and Nathan arrived. Allie was remorseful and promised not to do anything like that again.[4]
Season 7[]
Nathan and Allie Decide to Stay[]
During the Christmas season of 1916, Allie had made friends in Hope Valley and was finally beginning to feel like she had a permanent home. Upon discovering that Nathan had been offered an Inspector position which would require them to leave town, Allie was upset but had difficulty talking about her feelings with her uncle, since she knew he had wanted the position for a long time. She eventually confided in Elizabeth that she and Nathan would have to leave Hope Valley. Nathan eventually decided not to take the job and an excited Allie told Elizabeth the news. On Christmas morning, Nathan gave Allie a charm bracelet similar to one her mother had. He also gave her a pot of dirt and a pine cone they had found in the woods so they could plant a tree in the spring. Allie was overjoyed.[5]
Hosting Her First Sleepover[]
After school one day in autumn 1917, Allie excitedly asked Nathan if she could have a sleepover with her friends, which he agreed to. Allie went to the mercantile where she ran into Elizabeth, who was there buying typing paper. Nathan had given Allie a dollar to buy food for the party, and she was buying some candy. She told Elizabeth that when she’d gone to a sleepover at Opal’s house, Opal’s mother had helped the girls make taffy apples. When Elizabeth suggested Allie serve her friends cupcakes at her sleepover, Allie replied that she didn’t know how to make them. Elizabeth offered to make some cupcakes that the girls could frost together.
Meeting Her Grandfather[]
As Allie and Elizabeth were leaving the mercantile, an older man was passing by, and after hearing Allie’s name, exclaimed that she was the spitting image of her mother. Allie asked the man if he knew her mom, but the conversation was interrupted by Nathan, who asked Allie to go home. Allie realized the man was her grandfather, Archie Grant, and wanted to speak to him, but Nathan said no, and Elizabeth offered to walk her home. While walking together, Allie lamented to Elizabeth that she’d never got to meet her grandfather and that Nathan always changed the subject whenever she tried to talk about him. Elizabeth suggested she write down how she was feeling in her diary. When Nathan got home, Allie was writing in her diary. He tried to explain the situation but wasn’t willing to go into detail, leaving Allie’s curiosity unsatisfied. The arrival of her friends ended the discussion. At the sleepover, the girls decorated cupcakes and had a pillow fight.
Seeking Help from Elizabeth[]
The next day, Allie came to Elizabeth’s house to show her the list of reasons she’d come up with for why she should be allowed to talk to Archie. After getting feedback, Allie presented the list of 10 reasons to Nathan, but he still said no, out of a desire to protect her. Allie then made another list, this time of things she wanted to ask Archie about. Archie found Allie sitting outside at a table, and began telling her stories about her mother as a child.[6]
The following Sunday, Allie showed up at Elizabeth’s door with a suitcase, asking if she could stay there. Lee and Rosemary took her to church while Elizabeth talked with Nathan. Allie and Nathan discussed her seeing Archie again and weren’t able to come to an understanding.
Spending More Time With Elizabeth[]
Allie stayed with Elizabeth while Nathan went to Benson Hills to investigate the charges against Archie. Allie drew a picture of the house she lived in when her mother was alive, but did not remember her very well. Elizabeth sympathized and reassured Allie that Nathan really cared about her and was very proud of her.
On the way to school, Allie started to ask again to see Archie, but Elizabeth said no. During lunchtime, Allie left school and went to the jail. Elizabeth went to the jail and found Allie there talking to Archie. Outside, she gave Allie a firm reminder that Nathan had not allowed Allie to go into the jail without him, and reassured her that if Archie was innocent, Nathan wouldn’t let him go back to prison. After Archie was exonerated, he wrote down more stories about Colleen for Allie to read and promised to send more once he got settled into his new job up north.[7]

Seasons of Change[]
While Nathan was away investigating the shooting of Lucas Bouchard, Allie stayed with the Canfield family. When Nathan returned in the spring of 1921, Allie greeted him with a hug. He wanted to go fishing or do something else to spend time with her, but Allie had made plans with Angela. She offered to change her plans, but Nathan said to go ahead. The father and daughter exchanged “I love you’s.” Things were beginning to change a bit in their relationship as Allie got further into her teen years.[24]
Allie and Elizabeth planned a last-minute birthday party for Nathan. This came about due to some confusion Nathan had about Allie’s plans to take him fishing. Allie and Nathan did go fishing together before the party, and she gave him a new tackle box for his birthday. Although he was not generally a fan of large parties, Nathan enjoyed himself.
Allie used her job at the switchboard to find Jacob Canfield’s address so that Cooper and Angela could write to him. She wanted to help her friends, but worried they would get in trouble. Later, Allie also used the switchboard to call Granville Prison, requesting to meet her birth father, Dylan Parks. She took the train alone to the prison, telling no one except Angela where she was going. Nathan found out where she’d gone after he received a call from the prison, informing him that Dylan had refused to see Allie. Nathan and Elizabeth hurried to the prison to make sure Allie was okay. She was unharmed, but deeply upset due to Dylan’s refusal to see her. Nathan assured Allie that watching her grow up was one of the greatest joys in his life. After they all got home, Allie and Nathan had dinner at Jack and Elizabeth’s house, where she and Jack discussed spending time together grooming Pal and getting ice cream.
Season 12[]
As the new school year began in 1921, Allie began to feel left behind by her friends Emily and Angela, who were preparing to graduate and start the next chapter of their lives. Allie felt unsure about her future, as she was not sure what she wanted to do after she graduated. When the class took a field trip to the site of the proposed national park, Allie was intrigued by a paw print that Timmy found, and remembered that the library had a dichotomous key that would help them identify it. Allie and Nathan joined Elizabeth, Jack, Rosemary, Goldie, Bill, and Oliver for a potluck dinner at Elizabeth's house. After dinner, Allie played tag with Jack, Oliver, and Bill.[25]
Relationships[]
Family[]
- Nathan Grant (uncle, adoptive father): Nathan is the only father Allie has ever known. He became her guardian when she was four years old and formally adopted her when she was twelve. Nathan and Allie moved around a lot when she was younger, and Hope Valley was the first home where they really were able to put down roots. Nathan turned down a promotion to avoid uprooting her again since she was so happy and had made friends. Nathan and Allie disagreed at first over her desire to see her grandfather, and eventually they were able to be in better terms with him. Allie wanted Nathan to find love and sometimes interfered in the process, such as when she invited Elizabeth to dinner on Nathan’s behalf, and without his knowledge, when Elizabeth was already seeing someone else. Later. Allie asked Elizabeth for help finding someone for Nathan to marry, but Elizabeth gently urged her to let Nathan decide that for himself. When she realized Nathan and Elizabeth were getting close again, Allie was concerned for Nathan and didn’t want to see him hurt again. He assured her things were different now. Nathan and Allie argued over his refusal to allow her to see Dylan Parks. She went without permission, and Nathan went to find her. After that incident, Nathan reminded Allie of how proud he was of her and that it was a privilege to raise her. Allie was happy for Nathan and Elizabeth when they made their relationship official.
- Colleen Grant (mother, deceased)
- Dylan Parks (biological father)
- Archie Grant (grandfather)
Romances[]
- Robert Wolf (crush): Allie had a crush on Robert for a couple years and they danced together once. However, by 1920, Allie seemed to have gotten over her crush on Robert, and they didn’t really spend time together anymore.
Friends[]
- Opal Weise: Opal became good friends with Allie after she first arrived. Allie sometimes stayed with Opal’s family when Nathan had to go out of town.
- Angela Canfield: After some jealousy involving Robert, which they both got over, Allie and Angela became best friends. Allie stayed with the Canfields when Nathan had to go out of town. Allie and Angela went on a camping trip together with their dads in 1920, and Allie often walked with Angela through town, acting as a guide. In 1921, Allie helped Angela and Cooper find their uncle Jacob. Angela gave Allie some money for her journey to see her birth father.
- Emily Montgomery
- Elizabeth Thornton: Over the years, Elizabeth has been Allie’s teacher, but she’s also been a mentor, confidant and a source of support. As Allie has gotten closer to adulthood, her relationship with Elizabeth has become more of a friendship or something like a mother/daughter relationship. When Elizabeth and Nathan became a couple, Elizabeth told Allie that their relationship could be whatever Allie wanted it to be, but no matter what, she’d always be Allie’s teacher.
