Angela Canfield is a recurring character in the drama series When Calls the Heart. She is portrayed by Vienna Leacock.

Background[]

Angela is the oldest child of Joseph and Minnie Canfield, and the sister of Cooper Canfield. As a young child, she became ill, and her parents brought her to a doctor who wouldn't treat her due to prejudice. This led to her becoming blind. Despite her disability, Angela works hard and excels in her studies. Before arriving in Hope Valley, she was homeschooled by her mother. Angela loves music and is a talented pianist.

Storyline[]

Season 8[]

Angela arrived in Hope Valley in 1918, when she was 14 years old. She is helped down the stairs of their new home of their brother as she is blind. Her mother has been home schooling her. Elizabeth gives her one of her favorite books, Anne of Green Gables. Angela is excited. As Elizabeth tries to invite Angela to school, her mom, Minnie, cuts off Elizabeth. [1]

While her family drove home from the school house after Cooper's introductions, Angela makes it clear that she wants to go to school to be around children her own age. Her mother promises to think about it. Angela finds her piano on the truck and starts to play it. [1]

When Elizabeth and Jesse bring Cooper home after his first day of school, they get to hear Angela play. Elizabeth is moved to tears due to how beautiful she plays. She can hear something once and play it. She's talented. [1]

At graduation, after seeing the children accept Angela, Minnie agrees to allow Elizabeth to work with Angela. [2] When Elizabeth brings a braille book to Angela, Minnie, Elizabeth and Angela are all excited to learn Braille together. [3] During their lesson, Angela takes a break to play the piano. Minnie shares with Elizabeth that Angela has a gift of being able to hear something once then being able to play it herself beautifully. [4] Elizabeth visits again and Angela rushes out to give a hug to Elizabeth and Minnie says Angela's ready to start learning to read again. [5] Angela at her house, starts to learn from Elizabeth. Minnie is confident in Elizabeth so talks to her husband about it. [5]

Angela gets to play the piano during Florence and Ned's wedding. [6]

Angela is nervous about her first day of school. Minnie, her mother, asks why she is nervous. Angela admits she is nervous because what if the school closes because she goes to school. Minnie tells Angela to trust the other parents and students. They will see she belongs and she does. The parents and students come through for them. [7]

Season 9[]

Angela is offered to learn how to ride a horse by Robert but she had heard a story about how Robert didn't know so said he should learn first. [8] Joseph and Minnie, her parents, talk about why Angela is blind. It's because racist doctor refused to treat her. [9]

Angela is being taught by Elizabeth in the school but Mr. Landis announces that Elizabeth's certificate will not be accepted by the school board meaning Angela might have to leave school or the school will be shut down. [10] Minnie, Angela's mother, invites Mr. Landis to their home for dinner. Angela plays a song for him and he admits he was a music teacher. He joins her in playing teaching Angela some things. [11]

Season 10[]

Angela accompanied Allie, Nathan, and her father Joseph on a camping trip. She and Allie grew closer as friends during the trip. Later on, Angela wrote and sang a song about Hope Valley with Allie.

Season 11[]

Allie helped Angela and Cooper locate their estranged uncle Jacob, and they sent him a letter pretending to be their father. Eventually, Jacob arrived in Hope Valley and met his niece and nephew for the first time. Angela gave Allie money for her journey to see her birth father.

Season 12[]

Angela began her final year at The Jack Thornton School along with Timmy and Emily, who also were in their final year. She was interested in attending The Schwartzman School after graduation, which was in Hamilton. Minnie didn’t like the idea of Angela going so far away, and struggled with the idea of her firstborn child growing up.

Elizabeth borrowed a Braille copy of Helen Keller's autobiography from a library in another town. Angela was excited to read it. Angela also confided in Joseph that she was struggling with feeling different due to her blindness, which is why she wanted to attend a college where there were other blind people. Angela learned the Charleston along with the other teenagers and attended Allie's birthday party.[12]
