First visit[]
Augustus Landis arrived in Hope Valley in 1918. He is a school inspector sent to try to consolidate the Hope Valley School into a district school. He said that with the foundry families coming into town making the school grow, the school board plans to make her school into a district school. Elizabeth declines stating it is her school alone.
Landis then stated that Elizabeth was not accredited to teach Angela who is a blind student. If she were to continue to do so, her school would risk being shut down. Despite his threats, Elizabeth allows Angela to come to school along with her brother Cooper. Landis is impressed with the results and comes back to inspect her school one more time before leaving. [1]
Second visit[]
Augustus Landis arrived in Hope Valley again to school in an unofficial compacity to observe the graduation. He reminds Elizabeth she is not certified to teach Angela before he leaves. [2]
Third visit[]
Landis arrives back in town. Minnie sees him at the café much to her dismay. He tries to compliment Elizabeth when he first sees her but she shuts him down telling him to just say what he's really there. He came to tell Elizabeth that she will be gaining 100 students within the year so she will have to join the Valley School District to be able to accommodate them. Elizabeth denies it will happen. After Bill confirms this could happen, Elizabeth follows Landis into the saloon where they talk about the future of the school. Landis is concerned Angela will hold back the other students and he won't allow that to happen. Elizabeth meets up with him again and begs him allow her to teach a bright girl who has never had the chance to go to school with other children but Landis doesn't care. He plans to shut her down. [3]
Fourth visit[]
Landis arrives back in town again, this time determined to not have Elizabeth teach Angela. It's the first day of school and Angela is supposed to arrive. Landis is positive children and parents won't come due to Angela coming. Together Elizabeth and Landis wait. At first it appears there are no children coming but instead they arrive and wait for Angela to arrive. When Angela does finally come, Cooper races ahead to ring the bell announcing school is starting and together, parents and students all escort Angela to school. Landis was wrong. The children and parents do support having Angela in school. He said he cannot make any promises as he has to run it by the school board but Landis himself has seen how one student can affect the others. He leaves allowing Elizabeth to stay open. [4]
Season 9[]
Fifth visit[]
Landis is back in town. Elizabeth informs him that this time she is accredited to teach Angela. Unfortunately he states that since she was accredited outside the district, the school board will not accept her credentials. Cooper confides in Elizabeth, that he does not like Landis. During the school morning, Cooper glues Landis's hat to the table upsetting Landis very much. He starts to discipline Cooper but Elizabeth steps in telling him that it was his classroom so she will handle it. She is quite rude. He leaves. [5]
Elizabeth apologizes for her rudeness towards him. He lets her know he will inform her of the school's decision on her accreditation. He said he will try to persuade them to go in her favor. [5]
Landis is invited by Minnie to come to her house for dinner. He arrives in the rain drenched so borrows some of Joseph's clothes while his dry. They are very hospitable to him. He confesses he was a music teacher who gave private lessons. At the end of dinner, Angela plays a beautiful Beethoven piece. Landis joins her offering her some instruction.
