Storyline[]
Season 4[]
In 1914, Earl and his brother Chad arrived in Hope Valley and began attending The Jack Thornton School. The brothers were under the care of their uncle, Ray Wyatt, while their father, Russ Wyatt, was out of town. When he and Chad first arrived at school, Earl made a rude comment to Elizabeth about her school. Earl and Chad made fun of Opal and took her teddy bear, Brownie. Cody Stanton tried to stand up for her, and got into a fight with Earl when he tried to get Brownie back. During the struggle, the teddy bear's arm was torn off, and Cody and Earl began shoving each other. Elizabeth broke up the fight and told the class to go inside. Earl wouldn't obey her directions and said he had a stomachache. Elizabeth allowed him to go see Nurse Carter, but informed him that she'd be speaking to his uncle after school. The next day, Earl and Chad were upset with Elizabeth for going to their uncle about their behavior. Elizabeth informed them that they needed to apologize, and Earl told her that Wyatts don't apologize. Since the boys wouldn't cooperate, Elizabeth separated them, and sat both of them in the back of the classroom. During show and tell, Chad brought his recorder. This upset Earl, who walked out of the classroom.[1]
Russ Wyatt arrived in Hope Valley, and Elizabeth shared with him what had been happening with his sons at school. Earl saw that Chad was becoming friends with Cody Stanton, and tried to prevent him from doing so. Chad and Earl trashed the schoolhouse, and Elizabeth threatened them both with expulsion if they didn't apologize and clean up the mess. Elizabeth spoke to Russ again and urged him to talk to Earl about what happened with his mother. She believed that his fear of abandonment was causing him to lash out and bully other children. Chad confronted Earl about the expulsion, and they argued about it until Russ showed up, wanting an explanation for what happened at the school. He explained to his sons that their mother left him, not them, and apologized for being away so much. He promised to stay with them for now on. Along with his father and brother, Earl cleaned up the school, leaving it as good as new. Chad and Earl apologized to Elizabeth, who said they could return to school.[2]
Season 12[]
In the autumn of 1921, Earl returned to Hope Valley, looking for a job. At some point, his father had been rehired by the railroad company, which meant that Earl had an unlimited pass to ride the train anywhere he wanted to go. Earl apologized to Opal for bullying her when they were younger and shook her hand, telling her he was no longer a bully and now went by the name "Wyatt." Opal was dubious, but Allie was very taken with him, and nudged Opal to introduce her. Wyatt, as he was now called, complimented Allie's pigtails. A little while later, he was hired as a waiter at The Queen of Hearts.[3]
Allie came in to The Queen of Hearts with Opal and Emily on a day she knew Wyatt was working. Emily called Wyatt over to their table, and Opal invited him to Allie's party. Wyatt said he heard the party was the talk of the town and referred to Allie by the nickname "Pigtails." He thought the party could be fun, but didn't say exactly whether or not he would attend. On the day of the party, Allie kept looking around to see if he'd arrived yet. Wyatt showed up late to the party with a small bouquet of wildflowers. Allie was excited to see him, and asked him to dance, just as Oliver was about to give Allie her birthday gift. Wyatt and Allie danced together while Oliver watched in disappointment.[4]
Nathan and Elizabeth had become aware of Allie’s interest in Wyatt and weren’t happy about it, but weren’t sure how to broach the subject with her. Elizabeth saw Wyatt flirting with Ava in the saloon and took the opportunity to reintroduce herself to him. He remembered her and called her “Miss Thatcher.” Elizabeth let him know she was now called Mrs. Thornton and he told her he now went by Wyatt. After this exchange, Elizabeth tried to warn Allie that Wyatt might not feel the same way about her that she felt about him, but Allie wasn’t having it. Encouraged by their dance at her party, Allie summoned the courage to ask Wyatt on a picnic. He said picnics weren’t his thing, so she suggested a walk instead. Finally, Wyatt admitted to Allie that he thought of her as a nice kid but she wasn’t really his speed. Allie quickly walked away, trying not to let Wyatt see how upset she was.[5]
