When Calls the Heart Wiki

Elizabeth Thornton (née Thatcher) is the central character in When Calls the Heart. She is portrayed by Erin Krakow.

Background[]

Born into a wealthy family in Hamilton, Elizabeth is the middle daughter of William and Grace Thatcher. She has two sisters: younger sister Julie and older sister Viola. While growing up, Elizabeth and her sisters had a strict Swiss governess named Frau Bustenhaller.

Storyline[]

Season 1[]

Arrival in Coal Valley[]

In 1910, young teacher Elizabeth Thatcher was offered a teaching position in the small mining town of Coal Valley and was en route from Hamilton when her stagecoach was robbed by bandits. Arriving several days late and disheveled from the journey, Elizabeth introduced herself to some of the townswomen, who then discussed with her the circumstances of her job. They informed her of a mine explosion three months earlier that killed many of the men in the town. Due to Elizabeth's age, inexperience, and privileged background, they doubted her ability to properly teach and prepare their children for life after school, but mercifully decided to give her a trial run.[1]

During her first night, Elizabeth tried to adjust to living on her own and accidentally burned down the teacherage. Abigail Stanton, a widow who lost her husband and son in the mine explosion, allowed her to stay in her home instead and the two became fast friends.

Meeting Jack Thornton[]

Elizabeth's first morning of teaching was interrupted by a commotion at the mine, which was smoothed over by Jack Thornton, who introduced himself as the new constable of Coal Valley. Elizabeth and Jack met formally in the saloon and despite initially friendly introductions, it was discovered that Jack was reassigned to Coal Valley at the request of Elizabeth's father, for which Jack resented her. The two developed a hot-and-cold relationship but, by the end of the episode, agreed to be civil.

Despite some rough patches, Elizabeth proved herself to the children's mothers and was allowed to stay on as Coal Valley's teacher. Jack and Elizabeth's relationship continued to grow over the next episodes, during which Jack investigated the fire that burned down the church, while they continued alternating between feuding and flirting.

Elizabeth Meets a Con Man[]

In Episode 5, "The Dance", new miners arrived in town and one miner, Billy Hamilton, took a particular interest in Elizabeth. Jack immediately didn't trust Billy, but Elizabeth ignored his warnings, believing he was simply jealous. In Episode 6, "These Games", Elizabeth discovered that Billy was a conman who pursued her for her wealth rather than for herself. Elizabeth was hurt by this and did not treat Jack kindly since he didn't move toward a relationship with her despite the fact that he was clearly jealous of Billy.

Jack and Elizabeth Begin Courting[]

Elizabeth continued to teach the students of Coal Valley, trying to help them as they coped with the loss of their fathers. During that time Jack asked Elizabeth out on a date, which she initially refused, but then decided to accept, and they shared a meal at the saloon. After that, Abigail opened a café and Elizabeth moved with Abigail into the apartment above it. It is then that Elizabeth's younger sister, Julie, came for a visit. Julie was a romantic who then became involved with Nate Tolliver, a bank robber who posed as an injured farmer, who Jack was hunting. During this time Jack and Elizabeth had their first "real" date and shared a romantic dinner at Abigail's Café. Jack was then reassigned to a new post which he had requested when he originally came to Coal Valley. While Jack was on his way to his new post, he heard that Nate Tolliver was heading to Coal Valley and he turned back for fear that Elizabeth would be in harm's way. It turned out that while he was gone, Elizabeth and Julie had been kidnapped by Nate Tolliver and his gang. Jack then saved Elizabeth and refused the reassignment, staying in Coal Valley.

Rosemary’s Arrival in Coal Valley[]

Jack and Elizabeth finally appeared to be in a steady relationship, but soon a woman named Rosemary LeVeaux came to town to see Jack. Rosemary was Jack's ex-fiancé and she had broken their engagement. Rosemary was loud and dramatic but caught the whole town's attention, annoying Elizabeth. While Rosemary tried her hardest to win Jack back, she ultimately failed, as Jack was in love with Elizabeth. In the season finale, Jack and Elizabeth shared their first kiss and Rosemary decided to stay in Coal Valley.

Season 2[]

Visiting Hamilton[]

In Season 2, Elizabeth returned to Hamilton at the behest of her family, because her mother was having health issues. While back in Hamilton, she reconnected with a childhood friend, Charles Kensington. To Elizabeth, Charles was just an old friend, but he had romantic feelings for her, which were encouraged by the time they spent together during her visit and the urging of some of Elizabeth's family members. When Jack arrived in Hamilton, he was a fish out of water, and was uncomfortable with Charles and Elizabeth's friendship.

At the end of season 2, after they were trapped in the mine during a storm, Jack and Elizabeth had a long-overdue heart-to-heart and they admitted their love for each other and shared another kiss. Later, Jack prepared to propose; however, Charles beat him to it. Elizabeth rejected Charles' proposal, and in the New Year's special, Jack and Elizabeth's relationship was back on track.

Season 3[]

Season 4[]

Losing Her Job[]

Elizabeth continued teaching and then tried to get more supplies for the school considering more people are coming to work for the railroad. After she got fired because of a letter from a person who helps with teaching jobs, she quickly goes to Cape Fullerton to fix it. It comes to light that he wrote that letter because Elizabeth turned him down on his advances and he had done this to other women who were scared to say anything or they would lose their job. During her hiatus from teaching, the children asked Elizabeth to tutor them after school because they missed her. Eventually, Elizabeth’s name was cleared and she was reinstated as teacher.

Jack’s Mission and Proposal[]

Elizabeth and Jack continued their courtship, but their bliss was interrupted by the fighting going on in the Northern Territories. Jack volunteered to go on a mission there partly because of his innate sense of duty and partly because of his survivor's guilt over his friend Doug's death. Right before Jack left for the Northern Territories, he proposed to Elizabeth and she accepted. Unfortunately, due to the long duration of Jack's mission, the couple had to spend most of their engagement apart. They wrote letters as often as possible.

Season 5[]

Wedding, Tragic Loss, and a Glimmer of Hope[]

Jack finally returned from the Northern Territories, and the couple decided to wed as quickly as possible. Jack needed to go on one more mission, this time to Fort Clay, where he would help train recruits. Elizabeth accompanied him on the journey, which doubled as their honeymoon. She returned to Hope Valley without him, but anticipated his return. Sadly, Jack never did return from Fort Clay, as he was killed in a landslide while leading a training mission. Soon after Jack's death, Elizabeth began to experience pregnancy symptoms and Abigail realized that Elizabeth was pregnant with Jack's child.

Season 6[]

A Christmas Baby[]

In the Christmas special before Season 6, Elizabeth gave birth to Jack Jr., named after her late husband. While she initially struggled with Jack's absence, she eventually became thankful for little Jack as a living reminder of her late husband.

Adjusting to Life as a Single Mother[]

Four months after little Jack’s birth, Elizabeth went back to teaching. It was hard being away from her baby, but Elizabeth knew the children of Hope Valley needed her as their teacher. The women in town took turns watching Jack at first, but eventually Elizabeth decided to hire Laura as her full-time nanny. Elizabeth also secured a spot for Laura as a correspondence student at a prep school in Hamilton so she could earn money for her family and continue her studies.[2] Elizabeth taught Timmy to ride a bike and advised him on perseverance.

Meeting Lucas Bouchard[]

When she met Lucas for the first time, he offered her a job at the saloon and gave her several compliments before learning she was “Mrs.” Thornton and was the town schoolteacher. At the saloon’s grand re-opening party, Lucas inquired after Elizabeth’s husband, not knowing he had passed away.[3] At first, Elizabeth was not impressed by Lucas, calling him a “charmer.” She voted in favor of the proposed ordinance that would have required all businesses to close by 10 pm.[4]

Meeting Nathan Grant[]

A new Mountie, Nathan Grant, came to town. While he was initially cold, he warmed up to Elizabeth and began to have feelings for her. Elizabeth helped Nathan with some issues with his niece, Allie, encouraging her to make friends with the children in town. Lucas Bouchardalso became interested in Elizabeth. At the end of the season, Elizabeth chose to dance with Bouchard in a Ladies' Choice dance.[5]

Season 7[]

Writing a Novel[]

Elizabeth continued teaching while raising her son Jack Jr. as a single mother. Lucas took notice of her writing dream and encouraged her to pursue publishing her book. Elizabeth was upset when he sent part of her manuscript to his mother, Helen Bouchard, without Elizabeth's permission. However, an apology and promise to never do something like that again gained him forgiveness.

A Trip to Union City[]

Lucas and Nathan both tried to win Elizabeth's heart, but Lucas was more overt in his attentions. Lucas took her to an overnight Virginia Woolf reading in Union City, which had the trappings of a date, although they did not call it that. Upon her return, Nathan was jealous and treated her coldly. Elizabeth told Nathan that the reason she went to Union City with Lucas was because he asked. Elizabeth's relationships with both Lucas and Nathan continued to develop, and it became clear they were both possible romantic options.

Arguing and Making Up[]

Elizabeth took the children on a field trip. During a windstorm, Elizabeth went to find Emily, who had gotten stranded. Nathan was upset by this, because he believed that Elizabeth had endangered herself unnecessarily. They had a sharp disagreement about this situation, which later they resolved. Nathan told Elizabeth that he just wanted her to be safe because she mattered to him. Elizabeth encouraged Lucas to try to save Gowen Petroleum, which he agreed to do.

A Candlelit Dinner at the Library[]

Elizabeth heard from a publisher who wanted to publish her book. To celebrate, Lucas invited her to the library at night where he had set up a candlelight dinner, which had all the trappings of a date, but they did not call it one. They toasted her success with champagne, and Elizabeth was pleased with Lucas' attentions.

A Fateful Prisoner Transfer[]

The next day, Nathan was transporting a prisoner and a Mountie was shot. A wagon carried the Mountie into town and Carson Shepherd, the Town's doctor, announced the Mountie was dead. Elizabeth overheard this and feared that Nathan has been killed, but upon seeing him alive, she ran to him and threw her arms around him in the presence of the whole town.

Season 8[]

A Realization and a Dinner Invitation[]

Elizabeth didn't see Nathan or Lucas for several months, which she confessed was a relief because it gave her space to not face what feelings she has for both men. What she concluded at that time was she couldn't continue to see both as potential romantic partners. She told Rosemary that when Nathan was almost shot, she realized she cared more for him than she realized. Nathan asked her on a date, and she hesitated to say yes. He told her 'whenever you're ready.'

Next, Lucas arrived at her door after several months' absence. He confessed that after he saw Elizabeth hug Nathan, he let his jealousy get the better of him. He left shortly after New Years' to go help friends rebuild a school in Grand Isle, Louisiana, and to gain perspective. When Elizabeth asked if he has gained his perspective, he said he had. "Whatever you decide. I want for you to be happy."

Meeting Lucas's Mother[]

Nathan stopped by and again asked Elizabeth to dinner. She hesitated, but he offered to bring the kids along. Elizabeth walked with Nathan, Allie, and Little Jack toward Abigail's, stopping short when the stagecoach pulled up. Exiting the coach, a beautiful blonde woman hugged Lucas. Lucas introduced the woman as his mother, Helen Bouchard. Elizabeth suddenly began to feel ill, and asked Nathan to walk her home.

Helen spent a few days in town going over Elizabeth's manuscript to get it ready for print. She also confessed to Elizabeth that she had a secret: Lucas's father left her. She asked for that information to stay between the two of them. Keeping this secret from Lucas at Helen's insistence got Elizabeth in trouble when Lucas found out. Lucas lashed out at her in his hurt but the two quickly mended fences through mutual apologies.

Revelations and Relationships[]

Elizabeth encountered Nathan by the pond, where he confessed his love to her and told her that he knew she felt the same way. She became upset and told him she could not be with him. It would hurt too bad if she lost him like she lost Jack. He told her he was in love with her and an upset Elizabeth rode away in tears. Things became awkward between them.

After rejecting Nathan, Elizabeth finally agreed to begin to date Lucas and things seemed to be going well until she found out that Nathan was at Fort Clay around the same time Jack was there. She asked Nathan if he knew Jack and he said he never had the pleasure. She knew he was not telling her the whole truth and ultimately confronted him about it. When Nathan confessed that he had been disciplined for disobeying orders, which meant Jack went on the training mission in Nathan's place, Elizabeth was devastated and confused. This confusion bled over into all of her relationships and she began distancing herself from Lucas and from her best friend, Rosemary Coulter. However, at Florence and Ned's wedding reception, Elizabeth took Nathan aside, letting him know that she didn't blame him for Jack's death.

Making a Decision[]

Seeing several heated discussions between Nathan and Elizabeth, Lucas came to her door at night, telling her that he believed there might still be something between her and Nathan, so had to set her free so she could decide who to be with. Elizabeth was visibly upset. A little while later, Elizabeth received a galley copy of her manuscript. Looking over the manuscript, she removed her wedding rings from Jack. The following day, she encountered Lucas in the café, but their conversation was cut short.

After reconciling her friendship with Rosemary, Elizabeth went to the jail to see Nathan. She informed him that she did love him, but was not “in love” with him. She told Nathan that she had been trying to replace Jack with him. Later, she looked for Lucas at the saloon but learned that he left town. Elizabeth panicked and ran down the road out of town, searching for Lucas. She was in tears when she couldn't find him.

Not knowing what else to do, Elizabeth went to a bridge at the edge of town. Lucas arrived a short while later, and the couple rushed into each other's arms and kissed for the first time. A short time later, Elizabeth invited Lucas to the Library to again celebrate the publishing of her book. When he arrived, the room was decorated in candles. They sipped champagne together and again fell into each other's arms, sharing another kiss.

Season 9[]

Teaching and Celebrating Her Book Release[]

In 1919, Elizabeth continued in her role as a teacher, facing a little adversity when school superintendent Augustus Landis denied the validity of her certification to teach blind student, Angela Canfield. She wasn't seen writing anymore during the season, other than in her journal. Lucas threw a surprise party for her to celebrate her achievement. The whole town attended.

Engagement to Lucas[]

Elizabeth and Lucas grew closer as she got to know him more. Her feelings for him accelerated when she saw what an excellent father-figure he was to her son, little Jack and in a short time she confessed her love to him while he was sleeping. Turbulent events in Lucas's life threatened to pull them apart but she stood by Lucas and believed in him when few would. At one point, when he began to withdraw emotionally due to the trouble, she worried about what was going on with him and when he pulled a ring box out of his desk drawer as her birthday present, she thought he was going to propose. When he didn't, that coupled with his continued withdrawal made her worry that she was losing him. But at the end of the day, she had nothing to worry about. With the help of little Jack, Lucas got on one knee and proposed on a walk toward her home and they became engaged.

Season 10[]

Wedding Planning[]

In 1920, Elizabeth was busy teaching, raising Jack, and planning her wedding to Lucas. They set the date for October 24. One of the first things they did was cake tasting. Lucas brought Elizabeth a vanilla lavender cake to taste, and she enjoyed it. At this point, all seemed well with their relationship.

Helping Rosemary Through Pregnancy and Childbirth[]

Elizabeth did her best to help Rosemary through her final weeks of pregnancy, by lending her maternity clothing and helping to organize a surprise baby shower. Elizabeth also provided a sympathetic ear for Rosemary’s feelings about the loss of her mother and her sense of abandonment. During Rosemary’s labor, Elizabeth stayed by her side until Lee arrived, after which time she waited with the rest of the town with candles lit. After Goldie’s birth, Elizabeth was one of the first people to see her goddaughter.

Also during Rosemary’s labor, Elizabeth had a conversation with Nathan about how to discuss Jack’s father with him. Jack had been asking questions about his father, which was a similar situation to what Nathan had already gone through with Allie, whose mother had died when she was four years old.

A Suspicious Newcomer and the Return of Rosaleen[]

The suspicious arrival of Montague caused Elizabeth to distrust him and try to investigate his true intentions. Elizabeth received a visit from Rosaleen, a former student, and was able to catch up with her and provide a listening ear.

An Unexpected Conversation[]

One evening, Lucas and Elizabeth enjoyed a night out together while Allie babysat Jack. Elizabeth returned home from her date to find Allie asleep on Nathan’s shoulder on her living room sofa. Nathan explained that Allie had thought she’d lost Jack during a game of hide and seek, so she’d called for Nathan’s help. Nathan had found Jack under the sofa and decided to stay with Allie to make sure she was okay. Elizabeth invited Nathan to sit at her kitchen table and have apple juice. They discussed Elizabeth’s date and Jack’s questions about his father. Then, Elizabeth asked about Nathan and Faith dancing together. Sheepishly, Nathan told her that Faith had broken things off between them and that he was starting to feel like he should just give up on love. After Nathan left, Elizabeth picked up Jack’s old Mountie hat, which reminded her to visit his grave.

The following day, Elizabeth rode out to Jack’s grave, where she laid flowers and gave him an update on the latest Hope Valley news. She told Jack that his son reminded her so much of him and that he would be so proud of him.

Panic Over Nathan's Safety[]

Amid the water crisis, Nathan was sent to defuse a standoff. Florence and Ned got news that shots were fired. Elizabeth went looking for Nathan at the jail and discovered a telegram instructing him to go to Rock Creek. She began to panic when she saw Newton missing from the stables and broke down crying in front of Henry. Elizabeth made her way back to Main Street just in time to see Nathan return, unharmed and with a prisoner in tow.

Water Diversion Crisis[]

Elizabeth and the rest of the town put on a grand welcome for Governor Balfour. As the water crisis became more serious, Elizabeth was involved in a plan to try to stop the water diversion. She pleaded with Balfour not to allow it, but it turned out he was in cahoots with Montague and the other conspirators.

There had been a few hints that all was not well in Elizabeth and Lucas’ relationship, and eventually, in an effort to defeat the current Governor and save Hope Valley, Lucas had to run for Governor. This meant a potential relocation to Capital City, a place so far from Hope Valley that Elizabeth would have to be gone for four years if she and Lucas were married. This situation and a firm yet gentle confrontation from Nathan forced Elizabeth to take stock of what she really wanted.

Ending Her Engagement to Lucas[]

These events served as a wake-up call for Elizabeth about her life choices. She realized that she’d chosen Lucas for the wrong reasons: comfort and security. During a late night conversation with Rosemary, Elizabeth admitted these things  and said she realized she hadn’t been listening to her heart when she chose Lucas. Rosemary assured Elizabeth of her unconditional support no matter what she chose to do. Elizabeth decided to end her engagement to Lucas before he left to campaign for Governor. Elizabeth returned to Jack’s grave and said that although she had loved Lucas, he was not the right one for her. She had just been so afraid of being broken by grief and loss again.

Despite their split, Elizabeth supported Lucas for Governor and served as a poll worker on Election Day. She was named as Goldie’s godmother and stood with Henry, Goldie’s godfather, during the christening. At the very end of Season 10, Elizabeth and Nathan both found themselves back at the log where he had first professed his love for her. Their conversation was cut short, however, because Bill rode up, asking them both to come quickly because something had happened to Lucas.

Season 11[]

Right after Lucas was shot, Elizabeth went with Bill to visit him in the hospital in Capital City, and stayed until he was on the mend. She missed Nathan while he was gone for four months investigating Lucas’s shooting. When Nathan returned home in spring of 1921, she seemed excited and nervous. Elizabeth decided to get a new haircut, and browsed hair catalogues with Rosemary. Since Fiona had decided to remain in Nashville and not return to Hope Valley, Rosemary offered to cut Elizabeth’s hair. During the haircut, Elizabeth told Rosemary that she wasn’t sure if Nathan still had feelings for her.[6]

Elizabeth taught the class a lesson on the solar system and asked them to watch the skies at sunset to see the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. Together with the Coulter family, Jack, Allie, and Nathan, Elizabeth observed the astronomical event on her front steps. While they watched the skies, Elizabeth commented on how beautiful it was. Nathan replied, “Yeah, it is,” looking right at Elizabeth. Elizabeth smiled to herself, understanding the message.[6]

Relationships[]

Family[]

  • William Thatcher: Elizabeth’s father loved her, but his ideas differed from hers about what was best for her life. In his mind, she was better off remaining in high society and marrying a man in that social circle, like Charles Kensington. He was reluctant to accept her relationship with Jack because of their difference in social class, but did come to their wedding and walked Elizabeth down the aisle. William tried to get both Jack and Lucas to accept jobs in Hamilton so that Elizabeth would move back.
  • Viola Thatcher: Elizabeth’s older sister was very focused on her status in society. She was unable to understand Elizabeth’s choice to move west. She encouraged Charles to pursue Elizabeth in hopes she’d abandon her dream of teaching on the frontier.
  • Julie Thatcher: Elizabeth’s younger sister was a dreamer and a true romantic. As a romantic, she was in favor of Elizabeth and Jack’s relationship and even tried to run off with Jack’s brother Tom, not realizing the two situations were very different. Julie considered becoming a teacher herself to be like Elizabeth, but realized that wasn’t for her.
  • Aunt Agatha: Elizabeth’s aunt was wise and perceptive. She encouraged Elizabeth to make the most of her second chance at happiness but also picked up on the fact that Lucas had a greater destiny than just running a small-town saloon.

Romances[]

  • Jack Thornton (Husband, deceased): Upon his first meeting of Elizabeth, he was interested in her. After meeting, he figured out that Elizabeth's father had sent him to protect and watch over her. Since he had given up an opportunity that he had hoped for to 'babysit' Elizabeth, he was upset that she had been the cause of his new mission. However, he grew to like and then fall in love with her over time. However, the arrival of actress Rosemary LeVeaux reveals that Jack was briefly engaged before moving to Coal (Hope) Valley. This revelation causes a strain on Jack and Elizabeth's relationship. Jack tries to convince Rosemary he has moved on and despite her advances, she eventually comes to realize they have both changed and they could not have a relationship as they once did. Jack finds out that Elizabeth may be leaving, and in a last effort to convince her to stay, he takes her on a walk, gives her a framed picture of them that he himself had sketched, and asks her not to leave. He tells her she's the "only one", to which she replies that she's "not going anywhere", and they share a kiss. Throughout season 2, Elizabeth and Jack share a hot-and-cold relationship made complicated by family and former beaus. At the end of season 2, after they are trapped in the mine during a storm, they have a long-overdue heart-to-heart and they admit their love for each other and share another kiss. Later, Jack prepares to propose; however, Charles beats him to it. Charles is turned down by Elizabeth and the season 2/3 holiday special sees Elizabeth and Jack mending their relationship once and for all. In season 3, Jack begins the new year knowing that Elizabeth only has eyes for him and that her relationship with Charles is over for good. Jack's mother shows up unexpectedly and meets Elizabeth and is suspicious of her, but through staying she sees Elizabeth for who she really is: a genuine, good person. Halfway through season 4, Jack goes off on assignment to the notorious Northern Territories after his friend is killed in action in Jack's place. Prior to leaving, he proposes to Elizabeth and she eagerly accepts. She understands Jack's choice but struggles to find happiness outside of teaching. He briefly returns during the season 4/5 holiday special, much to Elizabeth's delight, but has to leave soon after. Early in season 5, Elizabeth is in the mercantile, where Florence rushes in. She ushers her outside to find an army of mounties walking through the town, coming home from the Northern territories. Elizabeth runs to look for Jack and when they finally reunite, they waste no time in getting married. A few days after their wedding, Jack was again sent away on assignment, but Elizabeth joined him on the trip there in place of their honeymoon. In the penultimate episode of season 5, a Mountie arrived in Hope Valley, bearing the news of that Jack had died at Fort Clay in a training accident. Elizabeth fell to the ground in grief, comforted by Abigail. Abigail passed on a letter Jack gave her for safekeeping before he left for the Northern Territories. In the letter, Jack explained to Elizabeth he would be with her always and hoped she could find love again. Soon after Jack’s death, Elizabeth discovered she was pregnant and gave birth to their son, Jack Jr.
  • Lucas Bouchard: She chose him to dance with during the Ladies Choice in the Season 6 Finale and their relationship grew over three seasons. He took her on several unofficial dates and finally began to court her, but due to mixed signals over Nathan, he set her free to follow her heart. Elizabeth decided Lucas was her choice at the end of season 8. They shared their first kiss at the bridge and later at the library. At the end of season 9, Elizabeth accepted his marriage proposal. In Season 10, they planned their wedding, but Elizabeth began having doubts about their future together as the shine began to wear off of their relationship. The things Lucas wanted to do for her became to be less and less welcome to Elizabeth, and she found herself confused by a resurgence of her feelings for Nathan. As her feelings began to shift, Elizabeth tried her best to make it work with Lucas, but it eventually became clear that they were not meant to be together. This culminated in her breaking off their engagement just before Lucas left to campaign for Governor. Despite their breakup, she remained a supporter of his campaign.
  • Nathan Grant: For 3 seasons, Elizabeth developed a close friendship with Nathan that at times was flirtatious. At the end of season 7, she thought he'd been killed and ran into his arms. But, at the beginning of season 8, she told him she couldn't be with him because it would hurt too much to lose him like she’d lost Jack. She was upset after Nathan confessed that he was supposed to lead the training mission that killed Jack, but eventually realized he wasn’t to blame. When Lucas set her free, Elizabeth decided that while she loved Nathan as a friend, she had been trying to find Jack in him. After her rejection, they rebuilt their friendship and remained close. Nathan attempted to move on with other women, but continued to carry a torch for Elizabeth, even if he wasn’t always aware of it. Nathan confronted Elizabeth about her choice to leave Hope Valley if Lucas won the election, which forced her to take a long, hard look at her future.
  • Billy Hamilton: In Season 1, Elizabeth was taken with Billy Hamilton, a new miner in town who quoted poetry and flattered her. Their romance was short-lived, however, because Elizabeth discovered that Billy was a conman seeking to get close to her because of her family’s money.

Friends[]

  • Abigail Stanton: A Coal (Hope) Valley woman who lost her husband and son in the mining accident. Abigail is a very kind woman, and she stands strongly for the things she believes in. She is one of the first women to welcome Elizabeth and the two women quickly become friends. Together, Abigail and Elizabeth move into the rooms above the cafe as Abigail opens it. She is a strong independent woman that is set on doing the things that are right and tries to help Elizabeth.
  • Charles Kensington III: An old friend of Elizabeth's whom she reconnects with while in Hamilton. While the relationship to Elizabeth is purely platonic, Charles quietly hopes to pursue a romantic relationship. While visiting the Thatcher's home on business, he is encouraged by Viola to tell Elizabeth how he feels and to convince her to come back to Hamilton for good. In response, he travels to Hope Valley and proposes to her - despite her being in a relationship with Jack. Elizabeth is shocked and turns him down. He is not seen again for the rest of the series.
  • Rosemary LeVeaux Coulter: A flamboyant, enthusiastic actress from New York. She was briefly engaged to Jack Thornton before he moved to Coal (Hope) Valley, but they both realized that their feelings were not romantic. Rosemary immediately disliked Elizabeth but eventually came to really care about Elizabeth. In season 3, Rosemary's friendship with Elizabeth deepens and she finds a true friend in her. She happily accepts a marriage proposal from Leland Coulter and the couple weds with Elizabeth and Abigail as her Maids of Honor. In season 5, after Jack returns and the wedding is on the horizon, Elizabeth chooses Rosemary and Abigail to be her Matrons of Honor at her wedding. When Elizabeth is in mourning, Rosemary willingly fills in for her at the schoolhouse to give her time to grieve and is a source of comfort for her. After Jack Jr. is born, Elizabeth chooses Rosemary and Lee to be his guardians.
