Fiona Miller is a recurring character in the drama series When Calls the Heart. She is portrayed by Kayla Wallace.

Background[]

Originally from San Francisco, Fiona worked with the telephone company when she first arrived. She was on assignment to Hope Valley to help establish and train new telephone operator to run the phone calls connecting within Hope Valley and the outside world.

Storyline[]

Fiona hired and was a mentor to Florence when she first took on the job. The two women worked in shifts at the switchboard.

Fiona talks to Clara while they are working at the cafe about what is bothering her. She admits she is having trouble with Jesse. He's not acknowledging how busy she is. Clara then follows her wondering where she always goes in such a hurry. Fiona finally admits too her close friends Clara and Faith that she is opening a barbershop! [1]

Fiona returns to Hope Valley in time for Florence's wedding to Ned. Fiona and Molly have to work on Florence's hair for her wedding. Florence wants it to be more than ordinary. Molly assures her that she is extraordinary. Just then Mike comes by for a haircut. Fiona lets him know it is woman's day. Mike smiles really big saying he is so happy to see Fiona is back home. [2]

At the Bachelorette party, Fiona introduces a risque game where you blindfold the female then allow the female to touch the hands of the males to find her true love. During Florence's turn, she does great and finds Ned's right away. During Elizabeth's turn, she thinks Nathan's is Lucas's. [2]

After Carson leaves. Faith told Fiona and Clara that Carson can be gone for up to two years and there is no guarantees he will ever return. Just then Florence and Molly arrive. Florence thanks everyone for her party saying she had so much fun. Faith comments she appreciates how open and honest Ned is about his feelings for Florence. Then Mike arrives asking Fiona to dinner. She accepts. After Mike leaves, Fiona assures them it is just two friends having dinner. [2]

Before Ned and Florence's wedding, Mike sees Fiona sitting outside the barbershop. He sits next to her hoping it's ok as he knows she does not want the town to gossip about them. He thinks of Fiona as more than a friend and tells Fiona who looks stiff until he hears her finish saying that he thinks of he as a confident. She seems satisfied with that compliment. [3]

Mike runs for mayor. He thinks he is running unopposed. Fiona jokes she is going to run as well but doesn't think anyone will vote for her. Mike reminds her that she has never let anything stop her in the past. [4]

When Carson finally leaves town, Fiona sees that Faith looks upset. She asks Faith if she is ok. Faith admits that she expected that Carson would still be there when the stage coach drove away. [4]

Fiona finds Mike at the mayor's office. He said it's been a unique few days between being given the oil business, running for mayor and Fiona interupts him saying, "and a new beau" as she adjusts his bow tie. Mike asks her for news and she announces that her old friend is willing to put up half the money of the oil fuel line. To celebrate, Fiona takes Mike for a ride on her motorbike. [5]

Barbershop[]

While Clara helps Fiona paint, Fiona explains why she is opening up a barbershop. She said it's where the men gather and talk and she's determined not to feel like a cog like her old boss, Mr. Nichols made her feel like but instead wants to feel like a big wheel. [1] She names it Nichols and Dimes. A play on her old boss's name to remind her to always treat people with respect. [6]

Once she opens, no man wants or trusts Fiona to cut their hair. Her first customer is Hickam who lost a bet to Jesse. It goes badly and she nicks his ear. This sends Mike Hickam racing through the streets to the infirmary where he is treated by Carson for his slightly nicked ear. He returns to the chair to allow Fiona to finish her job though. Eventually Faith brings Carson, and Clara brings Jesse. [6]

Fiona also gives Lucas a beard trim getting a really big tip. [7]

Fiona gets help from Hickam and Jesse. They help her add a chair to her barbershop. She notices that things are really strained between Jesse and Clara when Clara thanks Hickam but not Jesse giving him barely a peck when he asks for a kiss. [8]

When Clara delivers curtains to the shop, Fiona says she's going away for a bit and would like Clara to take over the shop in her absence. Clara agrees. [8]

Florence needs her hair done for the wedding. Molly, Rosemary, Faith and Clara all have opinions for how she should wear her hair. Florence is overwhelmed so Fiona shoos them out saying it's Florence's choice. Once they are inside, Florence tells Elizabeth and Fiona that she wants a style that will show Ned just how she feels about him. She always feels like the ugly duckling but wants to really feel beautiful and special today as today is special. Fiona assures Florence that she will fix her hair so that Florence will see the beautiful swan inside which is what everyone else sees. [9]

When this is going on, a businessman stops by the shop to ask for a haircut. Fiona informs him that they are closed for the day. He asks if Fiona is interested in selling. She said no. As he leaves, Jesse calls after the man as he's the one who stole his money! [9]

Fiona and Faith talk while a the barbershop. Fiona wants to know why Faith thinks Carson is going to propose. Faith explains that when talking to Carson at the wedding, he mentioned he wanted to get married. Fiona said that weddings were an aphrodisiac. She tells a story of she was engaged to someone she met at a wedding. She went to visit him in San Francisco which was the reason she actually went to visit there. When she was there, she realized that affection can't be bought so ended it returning to Hope Valley. [10]

Walter Wyman returns to the barbershop to ask for a haircut but what he really wants is to have her sell to him. She refuses asking him to leave. Fiona goes to tell Nathan that Wyman is back in town. [10]

Fiona and Faith are talking again at the barbershop. Carson did not propose and Faith is ok with it. She is just happy she made the right decision to stay. Fiona is happy she made that decision too and they toast to Hope Valley. [10]

Helping the town[]

Fiona hears the oil rig explodes and runs to it determined to help. Despite the men's first reaction of her being only a female, they accept her help out of necessity and she carries her own load as they charge towards the fire with a cart of dynamite to put the fire out. It is successful and Fiona helped save the day. [7]

In 1920, Fiona continued to run the Nichols & Dimes Barbershop, but also put her mechanical skills to good use. She moved into the rooms above Abigail’s Cafe along with Mei and Faith as roommates.

When Lucas bought a radio for The Queen of Hearts, it did not work, so Fiona figured out how to make an antenna for it. She also set up a microphone and radio transmitter for Governor’ Balfour’s visit. Lucas used this setup to make a broadcast speech exposing Balfour’s corruption and later made another broadcast where Rosemary interviewed him during his campaign for governor.

In order to distract herself from her lack of a love life, Fiona decided to play matchmaker for Mike and Mei. Her efforts eventually paid off as Mike asked Mei on a date and they both admitted that they really liked each other. At the end of Season 10, Fiona admitted that she was open to the possibility of love for herself.

Season 11[]

Fiona sent a telegram to Faith, letting her know she had decided to stay with in Nashville indefinitely to work with her sister and the other suffragettes for the cause of women’s rights.

Fiona returned just in time for Mei and Mike’s wedding. She served as Mike’s best woman. Fiona invited Faith to join her and the suffragettes in Nashville, but Faith had found her purpose caring for Lily in Hope Valley.

Season 12[]

In 1921, Fiona returned to Hope Valley in order to sell the salon. In her way into town, she came across Ava Riella, and offered her a ride. Fiona told Faith and Mei she intended to marry the man who kept proposing to her. She felt she needed to marry a wealthy man in order to have money for her political work. Faith and Mei were shocked to hear this news, but tried to be supportive. When Fiona heard Lee and Lucas weren’t getting along, she suggested that Mike and Joseph do some meddling in order to bring the two friends back together.[11]
