Grace Stewart (née Bennett, born approx. 1893) is a recurring character in Season 6 of When Calls the Heart and is a main character in Season 1 of When Hope Calls. She is portrayed by Jocelyn Hudon.
Background[]
Grace was the sister of Lillian Walsh. Her parents died of tuberculosis when she was 5, and the sisters were placed in separate orphanages after their parents' death. Grace didn’t remember much about her life with her birth family, but could remember that they would all wear matching pajamas on Christmas morning, and her birth mother smelled like lilacs and had a favorite lilac bush. Grace was never adopted, but spent her whole childhood in an orphanage.
When the sisters grew up, Lillian searched for Grace for a long time, and in February 1915, finally found her working as a waitress in a seafood restaurant. They attempted to open an orphanage in Fairview, but ran out of money, so they decided move the orphanage to Lillian's childhood home in the town of Brookfield.
Storyline[]
WCTH Season 6[]
At Christmastime 1915, Grace and her sister, Lillian Walsh, arrived in Hope Valley after their wagon broke down. They were transporting orphans to their new orphanage in Brookfield. During their stay, it was discovered that they had one extra child with them, because the girl had stowed away in the wagon after the matron at the children's previous orphanage had refused to let her go. Grace helped the girl discover her voice again so that she and her sister could be together in Brookfield.[1] This Christmas was the first one Grace and Lillian spent together since they were children.
In 1916, Grace returned to Hope Valley with an orphan named Spencer while they were on their way home to Brookfield. She and Spencer stayed with Lee and Rosemary, and they took part in the Founder's Day Festival.[2]
WHC Season 1[]
In 1916, Grace was running New Hope Orphanage along with Lillian and Eleanor. Milk was becoming expensive, so Grace decided to buy a cow. She ran into Chuck Stewart in the woods, who recommended she buy a cow from his mother, Tess. Grace went to see Tess, who was reluctant to sell her a cow at first, because Grace couldn't pay full price. Eventually, Grace convinced Tess to give her a discount, and took the cow home. Unfortunately, the cow wouldn't give milk at first due to a bad tooth, so Chuck came by, and after examining her, pulled the bad tooth.
During the fire, which claimed the general store and infirmary, Grace took the children home to the orphanage for safety. She even took some of the other children from town with her as well, and their parents picked them up after the fire was extinguished. Grace, Lillian, and Eleanor served a meal for all the townspeople who had been up all night fighting the fire.
