Jed Campbell is a minor character who was introduced in Season 3 of When Calls the Heart. He is portrayed by Daniel Arnold.

Background[]

Jed Campbell is a widower and the father of a daughter named Laura. He and his daughter lived in a cabin on a farm. After his wife died, he became stricken by grief and went through a difficult time.

Storyline[]

Season 3[]

During the holiday season, Jed and Laura were grieving the death of Jed’s wife. He had become consumed by work and couldn’t find much joy in life. He also didn’t understand why Laura needed to study art as part of her schooling. Elizabeth, seeing that Laura was struggling, urged Jed to allow some light back into his life and try to create a happier home for Laura. He agreed to try to make things better for her. He was proud of Laura for winning an art contest at school.

Season 4[]

Jed was upset because the railroad company wanted to move him to a different plot of land, so he complained about it to Abigail. He didn't want to leave his farm behind because it was his and Laura's home, and he had memories of his late wife there. The new land also wasn't suitable for farming. He got into an argument with Ned about it. Ned didn’t fully understand why Jed didn’t want to sell his land, and got upset because he was afraid the railroad might leave town if people were resistant to them. Eventually, Abigail cut a deal with Ray Wyatt to allow the railroad to build a main line in Hope Valley but not run it through the farmers’ land. Jed was able to keep his home.

Season 12[]

In the autumn of 1921, Jed had begun running a fruit and nut stand in town. He was displeased with the fact that the teenagers were running a hazelnut stand because they were undercutting his prices. Molly tried to reassure him, and Florence noted that she didn’t realize Molly had a soft spot for Jed. Rosemary remarked that he could be difficult.

When Allie Grant planned to have a birthday dance party, Jed opposed the idea and urged Lee to pass an emergency bylaw banning teenage dances. It wasn’t until Nathan and Elizabeth stepped in and offered to chaperone that he had a change of heart. Jed volunteered himself and Molly to help chaperone along with Nathan, Elizabeth, Minnie, and Joseph. Toward the end of the dance, he and Molly stepped outside. Molly worried that everyone thought she was fuddy-duddy for having opposed the dance at first. Jed told her he didn’t think so, and to him she was someone who cared and was passionate. He also told Molly that he thought the guy who had stood her up at her dance party when she was a girl was the dumbest guy he’d ever heard of. She asked him if he’d like to dance, and he agreed. While they danced, Jed decided to confess to Molly that he’d been the one who spent the gold coin, which he’d used to buy hazelnuts. Molly said that he should tell Bill, but it could wait until later. The two continued to dance happily.[1]
