Leland "Lee" Coulter is a main character in the drama series When Calls the Heart. He was introduced to Hope Valley at the beginning of Season 2.
Background[]
Lee Coulter grew up in Loveland, Ohio with his brother Patrick and sister Susannah. After his brother's death, the family fell apart and Lee lost touch with them. Lee missed his father's funeral because he wasn't on speaking terms with his family. He didn't even mention to Rosemary that he had a sister until they had been married for several years.
Storyline[]
Season 2[]
Lee arrived at a pivotal point in the town's history as there was a trial convicting the mining company of hazardous behavior which had resulted in a mine explosion, killing most of the men in town. Due to this conviction, the mine, which provided most of the jobs in town, closed.
However, Lee then announced to the town his opening of a sawmill, which brought new life to the town. The sawmill became a huge success, and Lee became well-loved in the town. Meanwhile, he and Rosemary begin dating.
Season 3[]
At the end of Season 3, he and Rosemary were married.
Season 4[]
The Coulters further settled into their life as a married couple, learning to deal with conflict - such as when Lee was teaching Rosemary how to drive.
Season 5[]
Lee took a stand with the town and told the National Pacific Railroad lawyer Jacob Westin that the sawmill company would not use the railway tracks for transport of its lumber if the latter reneged on its promise to build a depot in Hope Valley. Fortunately, the railroad company decided to push through with the original contract (after Mr. Westin was convinced by the whole town) and Lee’s sawmill company delivered lumber for the construction of town depot.
Season 6[]
Lee became further entrenched in Hope Valley's business world, showing himself to be a pillar of the community. He and Rosemary were selected as guardians to Jack Thornton, Jr. at his christening even as the couple themselves struggled with infertility.
Season 7[]
After a frightening windstorm in which a tree fell on him, Lee ended up with a somewhat minor concussion. After his recovery, he wanted to reconnect with his estranged sister, Susanna. She hung up the phone on Lee after he introduced himself. Lee later called her back saying he wanted to reconnect. Susanna decided to visit Lee in Hope Valley at short notice.
Season 8[]
Rosemary[]
Lee and Rosemary arrived home from their trip early because they were homesick and Lee was seasick. They were clearly happy to see Elizabeth and Little Jack and to be home. Seeing Jesse and Clara are having trouble in their marriage, they come up them. Rosemary tells Clara to give him time to read. On the other hand, Lee comes up with a plan to help them bond, getting them a bicycle built for two! [1]
Rosemary is worried that Lee is still at the oil ring when it exploded but instead he is safely back in town. Later on Lee insists on having his newly arrived chair in the perfect position before he can sit in it. It takes a while which Rosemary finds funny. Lee has removed his back brace to get ready for this moment but before he can sit, Jesse arrives to buy his motorbike. While Lee is selling his motorbike, Rosemary sits in Lee's chair and it breaks. Rosemary is honest and tells Lee who is not mad. He shares with her the reason why the chair meant so much to him. His grandfather was a woodworker. When he was 12, his grandfather and him built a chair just like that together. Lee admires his grandfather for selling things he made rather than just selling wood like him. Rosemary surprised Lee with a wood shop in their backyard. He was so happy. [2]
Rosemary goes back to Lee's office to learn that he has added her a desk to his office. She is excited and touched. She finally decided what she wants to do, open a newspaper! [3] Rosemary decides to call her newspaper, The Valley Voice receiving a thumbs up from Lee. [4] Lee admits he's jealous that Rosemary has figured out what she wants to do. To get her started, he helps her to set up a printing press. The next morning, Lee arrives with coffee and a copy of the morning newspaper, hers!! She is so excited and starts saying everything she needs to get done, hire more staff, get a better printing press and an office. Lee thought she might to get her own office but she corrects him, 'Our Office.'
Lee excitedly goes into their office and starts to announce what he wants to do. Rosemary guesses, 'run for mayor?' Lee wants to know how she guessed. She merely smiled and said she had an nose for news. [5]
Lee writes Dottie and offers to buy the dress shop. At first he does not tell Rosemary who is upset he'd do that without her permission. Then when Rosemary finds out and is upset, he assures Rachel they will be fine as Rosemary does not need to work as they have plenty of money to which Rosemary states that she wants to work. [6]
Family[]
Lee has dinner with his sister, Rachel, Elizabeth and his wife, Rosemary. During dinner. Rachel uses the slang word, "delish" and while Susannah reprimands her for not using the correct word, Lee and Rosemary think it's a great word to use. Rosemary boast about how wonderful things were on Broadway making Rachel wish to visit bigger cities instead of running her parents' furniture shop. Ultimately, Susannah thinks about everything and decides that Rachel should say with Lee and Rosemary as Bellingham is no place to raise a child. Rosemary eagerly agrees. Lee says, "What could go wrong?" [7] While caring for Rachel, Lee and Rosemary find a romance novel under her bed. As Lee reads it out loud, Rosemary blushes and laughs. [8] Rosemary and Lee find Rachel on the road in the woods. She got lost and is so happy to see them. [9] Rosemary learns they will get a break from parenting Rachel. She is to go back to Bellingham for her birthday. As Lee says, "Parenting a teenager is soo hard." [10]
Lee and Rosemary do not trust Christopher, Henry's son as Rosemary puts it, "She is an actress and knows a show when she sees one." [11] Lee had his pocket watch stolen by Christopher but doesn't know so asks Bill to keep an eye out for it. While he is there, Lee asks to try on the jacket when he sees it. Bill allows him after giving a speech after how he had earned and was upset at having to return it. [12] Christopher returns the watch to under Lee's car seat unknown to Lee who assumes he lost it under there. [13]
Meeting Christopher[]
At the café, Lee and Rosemary meet Christopher. Rosemary asks what brings him to Hope Valley. Christopher says he's here to talk to Henry. Henry cuts things short saying Christopher is here to settle unfinished business. [14]
Friendships[]
Lee noticed that Jesse was wearing the same pants as him. Jesse commented he bought them because he saw Lee was wearing them. Noticing Jesse looked upset about something and thinking it was something to do with Clara, Lee tries to reach out offering an ear. Jesse isn't ready to share yet. Lee once again gets concerned when he sees Jesse still at work late. Jesse once again isn't ready to share so goes home. [1] Later on, Lee sees Jesse who has no where to go after losing all Clara and his savings so tells him to get a room at the saloon. [15]
Rosemary takes it upon herself to try to track down the guy who stole Jesse and Clara's savings. She spread out a map on Lee's desk which annoys him. He moves it off his desk subtly but she unplugs his lamp so he leaves to go talk to Joseph annoyed. When Lee returned, When Lee returns, Rosemary has taken over the office with plans to go see the Canfield cabin to talk to the guys who took Jesse and Clara's savings. She wanted Lee to join her but he declines. When she gets there, [16]
Lee learns that he might need to see a chiropractor for his back as he threw out his back carrying a box from South America of coffee, 250 pounds of it. [17] Lee ordered a chair to be shipped. He is unable to sit in it though because of his back being thrown out. He tells Jesse and Rosemary that he must be first to sit in it. [18]
Elizabeth set up something special for her and Lee. She created a Hawaii based meal for them to enjoy. Rosemary loved it as did Lee and together they danced. Lee dressed up Little Jack in a poncho. [17]
Lee goes to visit Bill asking about his missing pocket watch (the one that Christopher stole). Bill said he had not seen him and it was not in the lost and found. Lee notices Bill's uniform and asked if he can try it on. Bill is upset that they would dare to ask for his uniform back. He had earned it. Lee asked if he can try it on. As he does all he can say is "Wow!" [11]
Lee learns from Jesse that Joseph is a pastor. Lee offers Joseph the pastor position. He accepts. Together they pick up and raise the bell into the steeple. [19] Lee talks to Joseph about callings. He says he's feeling pretty useless as he doesn't have a skill instead just selling lumber so others can build something. Joseph gives him the words of wisdom, "everyone is unique" so if Lee "keeps" his "heart and mind open" he will find it. [20]
During the wedding of Florence and Ned, Lee compliments Rosemary for the dress she helped to make for Florence. He also shares with her about Jesse getting conned and losing his savings. [21]
Nathan and Lee are searching for the missing Jesse. They instead from Lee's car which Jesse had been driving. Lee returns to town letting Clara know Jesse is still missing. When he's still missing later on, Lee helps to distract her by helping her to make a cake that will be there when he arrives home. [20]
Lee comes to speak with Joseph. While there he confesses he's feeling useless these days as he isn't the one making the items but instead selling the ingredients. He wonders when, like Joseph, he will find his calling. Joseph assures him that everyone is unique and if he gets an open mind, he will find it. [22]
Season 9[]
Lee runs for mayor but does not win. Lee instead joins his wife, Rosemary, in running their newspaper, The Valley Voice as the Managing Editor. [23] Lee's first written piece is "bold and brazen" about Mike Hickam being mayor. While writing his pieces, he and Rosemary learn important lessons on how powerful their newspaper really is after Lee writes various articles about Mike's duties as mayor. [24] Lee makes it up to Mike by writing a positive editorial on him. [25]
Lee makes a special chair for Rosemary with Joseph's help to surprise her and writes her a love poem. He declares that he wants to spend more time with Rosemary outside of their office. [26]
After Lee's friend, Pastor Joseph Canfield, is refused a loan to buy out Abigail's restuarant, Lee calls the bank arranging the loan to go through. He does not want Joseph to find out and is happy when he sees how happy Joseph is too have gotten the loan. [27] Joseph finds out eventually and is upset that Lee cosigned for the loan.
Lee meets with Arthur Gilchrist from Hearst office. Despite Rosemary being ill and unable to make iit, Lee goes thinking that Arthur was here to meet with him about The Valley Voice, Lee finds out instead Arthur is there to meet with him about a job opportunity. He offers him a job but Lee turns it down. [28]
Lee finds out Rosemary is pregnant. Excited, he rushes outside in his night clothes to shout it to the world, "We are going to have a baby!!" [29]
Season 10[]
In 1920, with the birth of his daughter, Goldie Coulter, Lee finally became a father.[30]
Season 11[]
In 1921, Lee sold some of his logging land for a new resort.[31] He bought The Queen of Hearts from Lucas, who needed to sell in order to avoid a conflict of interest, while keeping Mike Hickam on as manager.[32]
