Mei Hickam (née Sou) first appeared in Season 9 of When Calls the Heart. She is portrayed by Amanda Wong.
Background[]
Mei Sou was born to Chinese immigrant parents.[1] Her parents are deceased, and her brother Bo is a merchant mariner.[2] Since she had never been to China, Mei felt disconnected from her heritage until she discovered her grandmother’s journals. Her grandmother was a practitioner of herbal medicine. Mei went to pharmacy school and graduated top of her class.
Storyline[]
Season 9[]
Mei Sou arrived at Hope Valley wearing a scarf covering her face. She drove by Nathan who tried to chase after her to find out who she was but she removed the scarf and rolled down pants to become a skirt and rode on her horse by Nathan watched her ride by. Later on Nathan comments on her speed during her arrival suggesting he recognized her. [3]
Later on, Mei introduces herself as a licensed pharmacist. She had been corresponding with Ned and Florence Yost under the name Geoffrey. Although confused and not convinced, they allow Mei to carry on the job at the Yost's Pharmacy and Soda Fountain previously Dottie's Dress Shop. Faith also confronts Mei about not being Geoffrey. Mei is always vague in responding but explains she is qualified for the job. [4]
After Nathan and his horse, Newton, were hit by a car, Mei befriends Newton and earns his trust. [5] Nathan asks for Mei's help in earning Newton's trust again and she suggests patience and eventually helps him to work with Newton. [6]
Mei hires Bill Avery as her attorney and admits she has warrants out for her arrest by Geoffrey who claims she is married to him. [7] She did an interim under him and he wanted more. She refused so he claimed to all they were married and he even forged paperwork to prove it. [8] Mei has three warrants out for her arrest: Larceny, Spousal Abandonment and Forgery. [9] When Geoffrey arrived in town, he had Mei thrown in jail. [10] Nathan found out the marriage certificate was not real and Mei is released from jail and Geoffrey is sent away after Mei says, "I'm sorry. I do not love you." Mei embraces Nathan and they share a tender moment. Mei is hired as the permanent pharmacist and takes a Christmas picture with Allie and Nathan. [11] Shortly after though, Mei leaves to clear her name. [12]

- Faith Carter: Faith and Mei met in Chicago, when Faith was at medical school and Mei was apprenticing as a pharmacist. Faith vouched for Mei when she arrived in Hope Valley. Mei and Faith became roommates at the cafe.
- Fiona Miller: Fiona also was roommates with Mei and Faith at the cafe, until she left town to work with suffragettes in Nashville.
