Nathan Grant is the current Constable in Hope Valley. He first appeared in Season 6 and is portrayed by Kevin McGarry.

Background[]

Nathan Grant arrived in Hope Valley as the new town Constable after the death of Jack Thornton. Due to the incident at Fort Clay in which Jack died in an accident, Nathan decided to transfer to Hope Valley to look after the town and watch over Elizabeth and Jack Jr. Nathan had custody of his niece Allie, whom he eventually adopted. As time passed, Nathan became a respected member of the community and he developed good friendships. He took his duty to protect the town seriously and came to love his new community.

Nathan's personality is often that of a man of few words, but this doesn't mean that he is backward or generally shy. He can be guarded among strangers, but is open with those he knows as friends.

Storyline[]

Season 6[]

Nathan arrived in Hope Valley in 1916 with his 10-year-old niece named Allie. Allie's mother Colleen died when she was four years old, and her father, Dylan Parks, abandoned her. Because her grandmother was considered too frail to care for her, her uncle Nathan became her guardian. Allie noted that they moved around a lot with Nathan's work. When Nathan first arrived in Hope Valley, he was mistakenly jailed by Bill Avery after he tried to break up a fight.

Nathan and saloon proprietor Lucas Bouchard both became interested in Elizabeth. During this time, however, she was focused on raising Jack Jr. and wasn’t really looking for a relationship. During the dance at the end of Season 6, Elizabeth danced with Lucas, but shared a meaningful look with Nathan as he left sadly.[1]

Season 7[]

At Christmas in 1916, Nathan considered taking a promotion that would have meant his departure from Hope Valley, but ultimately decided against it after having a discussion with Elizabeth, who was not happy about the idea. She asked him to consider all the friends he and Allie had made. Nathan also realized how much Allie loved Hope Valley and felt at home there.[2] Nathan later revealed to Elizabeth that he had wanted to take the promotion so he could leave town, because he was falling for her. It seemed wrong to him at the time to have feelings for her since she was Jack’s widow and Nathan had chosen to come to Hope Valley to protect her.[3]

When Nathan's father, Archie Grant, came to town, Nathan treated him with suspicion because of their past history. Archie had hurt Nathan, his sister and his mother badly due to his gambling, stealing, and incarceration. Nathan was reluctant to allow Allie to talk to Archie, her grandfather, out of a desire to protect her. Nathan was ordered to arrest and investigate Archie for theft and was able to prove Archie's innocence and work to repair their relationship.

Nathan hosted a sleepover for Allie and her friends with some help from Elizabeth. Nathan was jealous when he found out that Elizabeth went to Union City with Lucas. Their friendship was strained for a while over this issue, but they worked things out.

At Elizabeth's request, Nathan talked to Robert about his interest in becoming a Mountie, and allowed Robert to shadow him at work while Elias O'Rourke was in custody. Robert decided that becoming a Mountie could wait.

On October 23, 1917,[4] Nathan and Bill Avery were accompanying the Mounties for the transfer of prisoner Elias O'Rourke, when they were interrupted by the prisoner's sister, Jenny O'Rourke, who held a gun on them. Nathan was almost successful in negotiating her surrender of the weapon, when another Mountie, Constable Novak, went for his gun and was killed by Jenny. When Nathan returned to town, he was very shaken - but so was Elizabeth, who believed he had been killed. When Elizabeth turned around and saw him alive, she rushed to him and threw her arms around him in relief - in the sight of the town and her would-be-suitor, Lucas Bouchard.[5]

Season 8[]

Romance with Elizabeth[]

In spring 1918, Nathan asks Elizabeth to dinner as he has been thinking about her a lot. She replies she needs to think about it. Finally after Nathan returns after the arrest of Dylan, Nathan once again asks Elizabeth to dinner. She has no babysitter for Jack so Allie and Jack come along. As they are walking in town, they meet Lucas and his mother. Elizabeth suddenly doesn't feel well so Nathan takes her back home. [6] Later on when Nathan passes by her in the street, he mentions how disappointed he is that they haven't had their dinner yet. He tells her that the needs her advice because Allie is starting to notice boys. No true plans are created yet. [7] Later on Nathan is at the mercantile and while he is there, he tells Elizabeth he is thinking of buying Bill's land to settle down. Elizabeth is impressed and wants to talk to him when he returns from looking at it. [7]

When Elizabeth tries to tell Nathan that things will not work between them because she'd be too afraid of lose him like she did Jack, he offers to give up the Mounties. He said he loved her. Elizabeth was greatly upset by this and rode off. After Elizabeth finally decided she wanted to be with Lucas, she informed Nathan that she loved him, but was not in love with him. She believed that she had been trying to replace Jack with Nathan, which wasn't fair. Nathan was naturally upset by this news but accepted it, and later encouraged Lucas to stick around and explore a possible future with Elizabeth.[8]

Elizabeth talks to Nathan about Allie being upset saying that she feared this would happen if things didn't work out between them. She tells him that he is Allie's rock and she depends on him. He said he understood which is why he's been hiding his feelings for Elizabeth. Elizabeth finally demanded he tell her what he has been hiding. Nathan tells the truth that he was suspended while in Fort Clay which resulted in Jack taking his place in the training (resulting in his death). Elizabeth is greatly hurt and leaves in tears. [9]

Trying to help Elizabeth, Rosemary talks to Nathan telling him how she used to have a crush on Jack and that it ended up hurting Elizabeth and Jack. She told Nathan this in hopes it would show Nathan how people can get hurt by other people's emotions and actions. [10] Elizabeth confronts Nathan as to why he kept Jack's cause of death from her. He explains he came to Hope Valley to watch over her and Little Jack but then he fell in love with Elizabeth complicating things and making him feel bad. Now he realizes love is worth fighting for. [10]

Then Elizabeth takes Nathan outside and explains that she does not blame him for Jack's death. They hold hands for a moment just as Lucas watches. [11] After thinking things through, later on Nathan lets Elizabeth know how much it means to him that she does not blame him for Jack's death. [12]

During Florence and Ned's bachelorette party, Fiona introduces a game where you blindfold the female and the touch the male's hands and choose their true love. Florence went first and found Ned's on the first try easily. Elizabeth went second and thought Nathan's was Lucas's. There was an awkward pause. [13]

Nathan comes over bringing with him bringing Florence's flowers to Elizabeth. While he is there, she offers to warm Nathan's jacket up by the fire. As she gives it back to him, they have a moment where they are close looking into each other's eyes and he agrees that it feels better. Nathan gets on his horse and rides away leaving Elizabeth feeling even more confused than ever. [14]

Allie's father[]

Nathan decided to officially adopt Allie when her father, Dylan Parks, showed up unexpectedly. Allie's father extorted Nathan for $1000.00. He promised he'd leave both Nathan and Allie alone never seeing them again. Nathan promised he'd give him money. Nathan asks Lucas for the money but doesn't tell Lucas why even when he asks. They exchange the money with just a nod. Nathan went to meet Allie's father alone, against the advice of Bill Avery. Bill thought it was a bad idea but agreed to watch over the town while he was gone. During the meeting, he was attacked and robbed by Dylan, giving the Mounties cause to arrest him. After the Mounties arrest Dylan, Nathan admits he knew Dylan would attack him but he needed to have that happen so he could have a reason to have him arrested. [6]

Allie and her adoption[]

While speaking to Bill Avery regarding Allie's adoption process, Nathan found out that Bill was looking to sell his plot of land. Interested, he rode off to visit the said plot. On the way back, he bumped into Elizabeth and professed his love to her. Elizabeth did not reciprocate the feeling, indicating she couldn't consider a relationship with him since she was afraid of losing him the way she lost Jack Thornton. [7] Her rejection caused Nathan to change his mind about buying Bill’s land. [15] Nathan does officially adopt Allie. Nathan thanks Bill for helping him out so much. [16] Nathan decides to have a celebration of Allie's adoption. Nathan invites Elizabeth but then notices on Allie's guest list, Elizabeth is not listed. Allie does not think Elizabeth likes them because she cares for Lucas instead. Nathan insists Elizabeth does like them. Then they discuss what he will say at the Adoption Ceremony and Allie admits she just wants him to promise never to leave her. Nathan tells Elizabeth when questioned that adopting Allie is the single best thing he has ever done in life but questions how Dylan could have left her. Elizabeth gently responds, "Haven't you ever lost someone so close to your heart that it tears you apart?" Nathan responds, "not yet." [16] Elizabeth goes to the ceremony and surprisingly is the only one invited by Allie making things awkward. [16] They try to discuss it later but Nathan is called away on a job. [9] Nathan tries to discuss it with Allie but again is called away to recapture the prisoner who has escaped yet again.[9]

Nathan takes Allie out for ice cream and promises he won't go to jail which is what Allie fears will happen. [17] Allie is going fishing with Nathan. She asks him if he still has feelings for Elizabeth. He does not exactly answer her instead saying that her asking isn't fair as he cannot talk to her about Robert. Allie claims to be not interested in Robert as he us interested in Anna. [18] Nathan takes Allie out to teach her how to ride a horse. They invite Elizabeth who declines stating she "is sure Allie will pick it up in no time." Allie joked like Robert. While practicing, Allie tries to ask if Nathan still likes Elizabeth. Nathan wonders if Allie is upset Robert likes Anna now. Allie admits she is so Nathan says she doesn't have to talk about that now. [18]

Nathan goes to the graduation at Allie's school. He thanks Elizabeth for everything. Elizabeth thanks Allie for a job well done. [19]

Nathan's investigation[]

Nathan was investigated by the Mounties for potential misconduct during the prisoner transfer in a show trial in Buxton that stemmed from an earlier incident for which the investigating superintendent, Andrew Hargraves, held a grudge. It would determine if Nathan could continue to be a Mountie. [15] Nathan does not volunteer why Hargraves is against him not even to Bill who discusses his case with him. [15] Bill and Nathan once again discuss his case and again Bill inquires into what Hargraves has against him. Nathan denies anything is going on. [20] Later on Bill is confided in by Nathan who tells Bill the story of what happened at Fort Clay. Nathan was disciplined when he disobeyed Hargraves orders. He knows Hargraves is after his badge in which Nathan said let him take it. When questioned, Nathan confirms that he did not know Jack. He also confesses that Elizabeth does not know that he was ever in Fort Clay. [21] In the end, it was Allie's statement that made the difference as she tells Hargraves that Nathan did nothing wrong and that he is "all she has." Nathan's name is cleared so all is well. [21]

Ultimately, that incident was revealed to be the fact that Nathan was disciplined for disobeying orders. He chose to arrest the cattle rustlers when he was just supposed to observe. That discipline resulted in Jack Thornton being sent on a training mission in Nathan's place - the same mission that resulted in Jack's death.[22] Elizabeth was unsettled by this news but ultimately knew Nathan was not to blame and told him so. [21]

Nathan and his Mountie Job[]

Nathan finds Christopher's stolen car just outside of town and brings it into town. [16] He and Bill look over it with Bill being determined to find something. [13]

Nathan is told by Rosemary about the Pickerman's. Nathan went back to talk to them, speaking to Spurlock. He wonders if the shot that scared Rosemary's horse was necessary and Spurlock wonders if there will be trouble. Nathan assures him there will be. [23]

Nathan helps to look for a missing Jesse. Nathan and Lee map out a plan after finding Lee's car that he had been driving. [8] Nathan rides into town informing Lee that they have not found Jesse but thankfully there has been a break in the weather allowing the men to continue looking. Nathan finally brings Jesse home to a worried Clara. [24]

Nathan is told by Fiona that Wyman is back in town. He goes to talk to him at the saloon interrupting Wyman presenting something to Mike and Lucas. Nathan takes Wyman with him to the jail to begin to ask questions bout Jesse's money. Unfortunately Nathan gets a phone call and has to leave so he places Wyman in jail for safe keeping. This is where Clara finds him later. Wyman asks Nathan's permission to explain what happened with Jesse's money to her when she asked. [25]

Lucas confrontations[]

While talking to Carson, Nathan declares, "I'm not giving up." [16] Lucas runs into Nathan after telling Christopher to spend time with Henry. Nathan declares that he is not giving up on Elizabeth. Lucas accepts this as long as he is sure he has the best interest of Allie and Elizabeth in mind as he does this. [26]

During Florence and Ned's wedding, Nathan and Lucas talk. Lucas tells Nathan that Allie visited him in the saloon and he explains what she said and he tells Lucas he thinks they can handle this between them without including Allie. Nathan appreciates keep Allie out of it. Lucas then adds that if Nathan could stop declaring his love for Elizabeth, it would help avoid these things which upsets Nathan. [11]

Nathan goes to visit Lucas in the saloon after hours. He admits to Lucas that he talked to Elizabeth and she is not in love with him but instead in love with Lucas. Nathan said he wasn't surprised as it has always been Lucas holding her attention and it wasn't the same with Nathan and Elizabeth. Lucas said he wasn't sure what he and Elizabeth shared. He had gotten a really good offer on the saloon and was thinking of taking it and leaving town. Nathan said he couldn't tell Lucas what to do but strongly suggests he stick around. He also added if the Pinkertons give him any trouble to let him know because he has his back. [27]

Season 9[]

In 1919, Nathan returned to town after dropping off Allie at his parents’ house in Rock Creek for a visit. It had been several months since Elizabeth had chosen Lucas and the situation was still a bit awkward between the three of them, though they were trying to move forward as friends.[28]

Shortly after he returned home, Nathan was involved in a hit-and-run accident in which he and his horse, Newton, were struck by a fleeing car. [29] When the man who was driving was apprehended, Nathan decided to let the man plea bargain as it is the right thing to do. [30] Nathan suffered a concussion which continued to give him grief throughout the season including headaches. [31] As he was healing, potential romantic interests began to appear associated with his recovery. His relationship with Faith continued to grow, and newcomer pharmacist Mei Sou, attracted his interest and helped him to release his pain over Elizabeth's rejection. The two of them bond over helping Nathan's horse, Newton, recover from the car accident which left him very much spooked. [32] Nathan finds out Mei has three warrants out for her arrest and has to arrest her when Geoffrey requests it. Nathan then finds the real marriage certificate freeing Mei who thanks him with a hug. [33]

Nathan is finally called "dad" by Allie and he starts the struggle of being a parent of a pre-teen/teenager. He gives Allie the advice to just treat her crush, Robert, as friends for now. He continues to bond with her throughout the season.

As the season progressed his relationships with Lucas and Elizabeth also changed. Lucas became an unexpected friend, though they still had issues to work through. Nathan learns to drive, now required of a Mountie, with instruction from Lucas. Nathan also challenges Lucas to a race and when Lucas's motorcycle dies, Nathan graciously offers to drive him home but is denied. Nathan wins the race and the attention. [34] They bond also while Lucas is away making camp outside of town. [35] Elizabeth and Nathan began to rebuild their friendship after her rejection of his romantic interest. She signs his book, "For Nathan, an impeccable Mountie and treasured friend" summing up their relationship perfectly. [36]

Season 10[]

In 1920, Nathan was more relaxed and sure of himself. His relationship with Allie was still strong, but conversations weren’t quite as easy because she was a teenager. Sometime between seasons 9 and 10, he had attempted to have a relationship with Faith, but things didn’t work out. They tried again at a relationship, but ultimately Faith broke it off because she recognized that there had always been “something in the way.”

For some reason, Superintendent Hargraves decided to send Nathan a failed Mountie dog named Scout. Scout didn’t obey very well and was not particularly helpful with Mountie business, but he was a good companion for Nathan and Allie. Nathan drew an adoption poster for Scout in hopes that someone else would take him, but ultimately decided to keep the dog.

Elizabeth’s engagement and the passage of time since she broke his heart allowed Elizabeth and Nathan to develop an easy, friendly rapport. She asked him for advice about how to discuss Jack’s father with him since he’d gone through a similar situation.[37] Nathan went on a camping trip with Allie, Joseph, and Angela.[38]

One night, Allie was babysitting Jack and thought she’d lost him during a game of hide and seek, so she called for Nathan to come help her. He found Jack under the couch, and decided to stay with Allie to ease her nerves since this was her first time babysitting. Allie fell asleep while reading with Nathan, and Elizabeth returned from her date to find Nathan sitting on her couch with Allie. Elizabeth invited him to have apple juice with her, and they discussed Jack’s questions about his father, Allie’s future as a babysitter, and Nathan’s bad luck in love. He concluded that it might be best if he gave up on love.[39]

Amid the water crisis, the farmer’s standoff in Rock Creek escalated and Nathan was sent to address the problem. He successfully defused the situation and offered to trade places with the hostage, but word got back to Hope Valley that he’d been taken hostage. Bill arrived and together they arrested the perpetrators. When Nathan returned, Allie gave him a big hug and Elizabeth watched in relief.[40]

When Governor Balfour visited Hope Valley, he awarded Nathan a medal. Nathan gave a speech about how honored he was to serve the people of Hope Valley and how he was blessed to call the town his home. He was nervous about speaking publicly, but after some advice from Elizabeth, his confidence was bolstered.[41]

After Lucas decided to run for governor, Nathan noticed Elizabeth seemed stressed and unhappy. He picked up on the fact that she was conflicted about a potential move to Capital City and confronted her about it after school one day. He asked her to consider what she really wanted, and she said she wanted Lucas to win and would accompany him on the campaign trail. Nathan left her with the words, “Be safe,” which she’d said to him several times before.[42]

After Elizabeth broke her engagement to Lucas, Nathan avoided her for a few weeks, partly because he was busy with the water diversion situation and partly because he felt he’d overstepped by questioning Elizabeth about staying in Hope Valley. On Election Day, he apologized for overstepping, but she wasn’t angry with him. In the fall of 1920, the two found themselves back at the log by the pond where Nathan, years before, had told Elizabeth he loved her. They both seemed surprised to see each other, but the conversation was interrupted by Bill, who asked them to come right away because something happened to Lucas. They rode off side by side.[43]

Season 11[]

Right after the events of the Season 10 finale, Nathan, Elizabeth, and Bill arrived back in town and received word of Lucas’s condition: he had been shot by an unknown assailant. After the attempted assassination, Nathan was assigned to a special investigative team to help catch the perpetrator. He was gone from Hope Valley for several months during the investigation, returning home in the spring of 1921 after the Mounties caught a suspect and closed the case. However, Nathan’s gut instinct told him something wasn’t right, and Bill agreed. Since Nathan’s hands were tied by Hargraves, who had ordered the case to be closed, he suggested that Bill request the case files and continue investigating on his own.[44]

Allie greeted Nathan with a hug upon his return. He had missed his daughter and wanted to spend some time with her, but she’d made plans with Angela. Nathan’s first encounter with Elizabeth after his return was happy but a bit awkward, since the two hadn’t yet been able to discuss where they stood in terms of their relationship. When he saw her again at the saloon, Nathan complimented Elizabeth on her haircut, telling her she looked great. He and Allie joined Elizabeth and Jack, along with the Coulter family, to watch the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter on Elizabeth’s front steps. When Elizabeth remarked about how beautiful the display was, Nathan replied, “Yeah, it is,” looking directly at Elizabeth. Her smile showed she understood his meaning.[44]

As he and Elizabeth danced around their feelings, Nathan spent some time trying to figure out where he and Elizabeth stood with each other. He sometimes saw her being friendly with Lucas, and since he didn’t know the exact reason why their relationship ended, wondered if they were going to get back together, considering the fact that Lucas was able to spend much more time in Hope Valley than he originally anticipated. Eventually, Nathan decided to ask Elizabeth outright if there was still anything between her and Lucas. She gave an emphatic no: she and Lucas had decided to be friends only. With that said, Nathan inquired about her feelings for him. She couldn’t answer right away due to an interruption, but later stopped by his house with an answer: “Friends don’t look at friends this way.”

With the knowledge that Lucas and Elizabeth’s relationship was indeed over for good and that she considered him more than a friend, Nathan was ready to move forward. However, some issues arose, both in their personal lives and in the town as a whole. Nathan supported Elizabeth during her struggle against Thomas Higgins, a man who abused his authority over female teachers to gain sexual favors from them. He helped her see that she could finally bring Higgins to justice, and used his authority as a Mountie to help the process along.

After Higgins was dealt with, a new issue arose: Tom Thornton came to Hope Valley, and unknowingly bilked the townspeople out of their money that was supposed to be for a music festival in Salt Lake City. Nathan teamed up with Elizabeth to help Tom get out of the mess he was in, thanks to Mr. Sweeney, a shady music publisher he was working for. Nathan came up with the idea that they would hold a fundraiser to recoup the money taken by Sweeney, and they eventually decided the fundraiser would be a music festival in Hope Valley. Nathan enjoyed meeting Tom, who thought Nathan and Jack would have liked each other. Tom voiced his approval of Nathan to Elizabeth.

Nathan said something about Dylan Parks to Faith that was overheard by Allie. This got her thinking about meeting him. When she asked Nathan about, he said it wasn’t a good idea and didn’t allow it. When Allie pressed further, Nathan told her that Dylan was in Granville Prison. After Allie took off alone to the prison to see her birth father, Nathan and Elizabeth went after her. They brought her home safely, and Nathan reminded Allie of how much he loved her and how proud he was to be her dad. Nathan, Allie, Elizabeth, and Jack enjoyed a family dinner at Elizabeth’s house after Allie returned home.

Nathan and Elizabeth made plans to go horseback riding together, but were interrupted by concerns over Casimir Shaw. Nathan accompanied some other men from town to search the area for signs of Shaw, but eventually realized he was already there. Elizabeth was held hostage along with Rosemary in the saloon, by Jeanette Aucoin (who was using the alias Casimir Shaw) and her accomplice. Nathan and Bill entered the saloon, and a standoff ensued. Jeanette’s accomplice took Elizabeth upstairs to the balcony at gunpoint, and Nathan followed. He tried to bargain with the accomplice for leniency in exchange for his testimony against Jeanette. However, the man wouldn’t comply. Just then, Bill arrived on the balcony as backup, and Nathan and Elizabeth realized there was just one way out of the situation: after an unspoken understanding, they jumped off the balcony together into a hay wagon. Backup had arrived from The Mounties and the two criminals were arrested.

Relationships[]

Family[]

Romances[]

  • Elizabeth Thornton (girlfriend): She and Nathan met in 1916 and bonded almost immediately over their experiences of single parenthood and his role as a Mountie, which Elizabeth understood well after her relationship with Jack. They developed a deep friendship that was at times flirtatious, but Elizabeth closed the door on romance between them because she was afraid of getting hurt again in case something should happen to Nathan. In Season 8, Nathan admitted to Elizabeth that he loved her, but she told him she could not be more than his friend and embarked on a relationship with Lucas. They rebuilt their friendship and were close. In 1920, Elizabeth became distraught by the thought that something could have happened to Nathan while out on an assignment. Overwhelmed, she had a panic attack and ran to the library to cry, but denied the significance of the event to Henry. After her breakup with Lucas, things were awkward again between Nathan and Elizabeth until she assured him that she and Lucas were over for good. Interruptions, life challenges, and hesitation due to their history hampered their romance at first. However, after a harrowing experience in which Elizabeth and Rosemary were held hostage, Elizabeth finally confessed to Nathan that she was in love with him. Nathan told Elizabeth that he’d never stopped loving her and they shared two kisses. After making the relationship official, they went on a family picnic with their children, and their first date with just the two of them was to Mike and Mei’s wedding.
  • Faith Carter (brief relationship): Faith developed feelings for Nathan in 1919, after treating him for his hit and run accident. She was conflicted about these feelings due to his being her patient. They tried having a relationship, but eventually Faith realized Nathan’s heart wasn’t in it, despite his best efforts.
  • Mei Sou: Nathan was intrigued by Mei after her mysterious arrival in town. This was complicated by the fact that he was unsure if she was actually single or not. Mei helped Nathan and his horse Newton recover from their accident, and Nathan helped her with Geoffrey, a former boss who was harassing her. Although at one time they both showed some interest, things never really clicked for them to have much of a romance together. By 1920, they had both decided to be friends.

Friendships[]

  • Bill Avery: Nathan was often seen working on cases with Bill Avery. As a Mountie and former Mountie, they understood each other and were a good team.
  • Newton: Nathan’s horse Newton is one of his closest companions. They share a special bond.
  • Carson Shepherd
  • Lee Coulter
  • Lucas Bouchard: Nathan distrusted and did not get along well at first with Lucas Bouchard because of Lucas’s history as a gambler and their shared interest in Elizabeth, but they eventually reached an understanding and mutual respect.
