Edmund “Ned” Yost is a recurring character in the drama series When Calls the Heart. He is portrayed by Hrothgar Mathews.

The Mercantile and Mail Delivery[]

Ned is running still the mercantile and handling the mail. He and his wife, Florence, let Carson know there is no mail for Faith (who is away at school in Chicago), and then discloses this to Henry who is concerned. [1]

When Henry comes to get his mail, he notices the letter he sent is opened and accuses Florence and Ned of opening his mail. They refuse. Henry gets greatly upset, so upset that he causes himself to get dizzy and stumble from high blood pressure. [2] When Henry feels better, he apologizes for his behavior to both Ned and Florence. Henry gives Florence an "I'm sorry" bouquet of flowers. Both Ned and Florence at touched by the gesture. [3]

Ned is hand delivering mail to the people of the town. He takes one to Rosemary. She finds out Dottie is selling the dress shop. He hand delivers some to Bill and encourages Bill to try on his Mountie uniform. [4]

Injuries and Illnesses[]

After the oil explodes, Ned joins the crew in stopping the fire. Heroically he helps to use a heavy cart to add dynamite to the oil which manages to stop the fire. However, he is injured during he adventure. He is seen by Carson for an injured ankle. Despite Faith and Carson disagreeing on what kind of fracture it is, Ned's ankle is wrapped up and is sent home to heal. Florence think he's a hero despite Ned being embarrassed for helping. [5]

Ned is having stomach pains. Florence tries to encourage him to go to the infirmary. He says he will if it continues to act up. [4] After Ned collapses, he is unconscious with Florence by his side as Carson and Faith look over his health history. He needs to have his gallbladder removed. It has ruptured. Both are worried as Carson admits he should have pushed harder for him to go to Union City for treatment earlier. Molly brings soup for Florence to eat as she will not leave his side. When she learns that Carson and Faith have to operate on Ned, she is distraught as Ned's daughter is not here. Ned isn't worried and instead asks Florence to marry him when he wakes up. She is overjoyed and said "YES!". [6]

After Ned's surgery, Florence visits Ned and sings a song to him. Florence also refuses to get some rest wanting to instead be with Ned. Later on, Florence is distraught after learning from Carson that Ned will need another operation. [6] When he wakes up from his operation, he sees Florence sitting by his bed. He is delighted. He asked Florence if while fever induced, did he really ask Florence to marry him? She is nervous that he will retract it but admits he did. Instead a smile goes across Ned's face as he is happy to have such good news that she said yes! [6]

Romance with Florence[]

When Ned is dealing with stomach pains, Florence places her hand over his admitting she is worried about him. She cares about him and wants to take care of him. [4]

Florence offers to Ned a family solution for his stomach pains. She again expresses how worried she is for him and how much she cares about him. They have a tender moment until Elizabeth interrupts them. Florence comments about needing a bell on the door. [7]

Florence gets a package which is a present for Ned. They open the package together. Florence had ordered a beehive for Ned but instead she got a beekeeper outfit. Ned is excited and asks Florence how she knew he was into bees. Florence tenderly admits, she is into all things Ned. They smile. The moment is interrupted by the bell going off saying they have a new customer. Florence is touched Ned added a bell for her. [8]

Ned tries on the beekeeper suit and it fits perfectly. He's really excited about it and goes outside to show it off. He gets overheated and passes out so Carson and Faith rush to help him. They bring him back to the infirmary. [7]

Florence knows Ned wants to run the mercantile but also wants him to rest. As she tucks a blanket around him in his chair, she introduces him to their new mail carrier, Robert! [9] Ned feels useless. He feels as though Robert is replacing him. Florence assures him that this is not the case. She was only trying to make things easier on him so he could rest and heal. He accepts her apology. [9]

Wedding to Florence[]

Ned asks Molly if he can see Florence. Molly refuses insisting that he wait until the wedding. Ned insists it's really important but Molly just won't listen. [10] Then Henry at Ned and Florence's wedding, gives a scared Ned the advice that he is a good man and should be able to get married whenever he wans to get married. Ned is touched and asked Henry to be the best man. When Ned asks Henry what Florence sees in him, Henry replies, "it's a gift when one sees something in the other that one cannot see themselves." [11]

Ned on his big wedding day, has an issue with his daughter, Katie, who does not want him to get married. Ned sends an invitation to Katie inviting her to the wedding. Elizabeth then gives Ned some advice as he's a fellow widower. She said they have to remember what they learned from loss, that life is brief and unexpected, and that what matters is what we do today.[10]

Ned before the wedding, gets cold feet. He tries to talk to Carson about it but Bill brings him to Lee, Jesse and Hickam. Jesse comments that marriage is hard. Ned still having cold feet, tries to convince Molly he needs to talk to Florence. Molly says he must wait for the wedding ceremony. Henry then talks to Ned giving the scared Ned the advice that he is a good man and should be able to get married whenever he wans to get married. Ned is touched and asked Henry to be the best man. When Ned asks Henry what Florence sees in him, Henry replies, "it's a gift when one sees something in the other that one cannot see themselves." When Fiona was distracted, Ned snuck in to see Florence admitting he had cold feet. Florence said no matter what, she would not think less of him and he decides that thicker socks will do the trick. Touched, Florence gives him a kiss before he goes. [11]

After the wedding, Ned gives Florence his family heirloom, a ring stating that his mother would have wanted her to have it. [11]

Ned and Florence go away on their honeymoon together but Florence returns without him. Florence gets worried not hearing from him. He finally returns and shows Florence why. He has invented band-aids. Florence is delighted. [12]

Season 9[]

Ned and his wife, Florence have taken over Dottie's Dress Shop and have changed it to be the Yost's Pharmacy and Soda Fountain. He and his wife announce the news doing a fun song and dance together. [13] Ned and Florence struggle with Mei Sou who misled them by claiming to be Geoffrey in her letters as the pharmacist. Once it is decided she has the credentials, they hire her temporarily.[14]

Ned has a toaster and spends a lot of time perfecting the toast coming from it. [15]
