Rachel Hughes (née Thom) is a recurring character who appeared in Season 8 of When Calls the Heart. She is portrayed by Jennifer Laporte.
Background[]
Rachel was born in the summer of 1900 to Jake and Susannah Thom. Her older brother is Patrick Thom. She grew up in Bellingham, WA.
Storyline[]
Season 8[]
Rachel met her aunt and uncle, Lee and Rosemary Coulter, for the first time in 1918. She and her mother, Susannah, visited Lee and Rosemary in Hope Valley. Rachel was a hopeless romantic viewing Hope Valley as the wild west, full of adventure. Rachel spots Jesse and admires him despite her mother's directions to keep looking forward. [1]
Rachel is consisting being reprimanded by her mother who is very strict. This happens again while she, Elizabeth and Lee had dinner with Rachel and Susannah. Rachel uses the slang word, "delish" and while Susannah reprimands her for not using the correct word, Lee and Rosemary think it's a great word to use. Rosemary boast about how wonderful things were on Broadway making Rachel wish to visit bigger cities instead of running her parents' furniture shop. [1]
While working at the dress shop part time, Rachel manages to pick out the perfect outfit for Molly who is trying to impress Bill. Rosemary tells her to pick out something for herself and she does. Her mother insults her telling her to take it off. She refuses to listen saying that Rachel will be joining them in working in the furniture shop. After thinking it over, Susannah asks Lee and Rosemary if Rachel could stay with them. They agree and Rachel says while Susannah goes home. [1]
Rachel doesn't come home one night so Rosemary and Lee look for her and find Rachel on the road in the woods. She got lost and is so happy to see them. [2]
When Christopher arrived in Hope Valley, he soon became acquainted with Rachel Thom, and the two developed a romantic interest in each other. Rachel witnessed Christopher pickpocketing her uncle Lee's watch, but didn't tell anyone about what she'd seen. She sees him in the shop and says she can see he's up to no good. [3] She sees him in the window after putting on some makeup. She refers to herself as a special lady that he might be looking for. He's hoping that the special lady might like what she sees in the window. [4] Christopher goes to see Rachel offering her flowers that he found tossed down outside (they were Jesse's for Clara). He announces that he is staying in town to work with his father. He hopes to see more of her. [5] Christopher stops by the shop, making plans to go see the town with Rachel but Rosemary offers a different time so Lee can take them. [6] Rachel finds Christopher outside the infirmary. Rachel asks Christopher if he's afraid of getting close to Henry as that will make him fear losing him. She gives Christopher the advice of taking a chance on someone after he asks her what he should do. They promise to see each other tomorrow and seal it with a kiss. [7] Christopher returns the watch to under Lee's car seat unknown to Lee who assumes he lost it under there. When he goes to see her later that day, he finds she has already left. He is disappointed that he missed her. [6]
Off screen, Rachel gets joined by Christopher. It is seen in pictures in a letter sent to Henry from Christopher. They seem happy. [8]

- In Season 9, Henry mentioned that he'd heard from Christopher and it looked like he and Rachel were getting married. Therefore, it is assumed they are now married, unless proven otherwise.
