Rosaleen Sullivan is a recurring character in the Hallmark drama series When Calls the Heart. She is portrayed by Mamie Laverock.
Background[]
Rosaleen is the daughter of Patrick and Molly Sullivan. Her father was one of the miners killed in the accident at the beginning of When Calls the Heart. As a child, she had trouble coping with her father’s death and held a longstanding grudge against Henry Gowen because of it.
Storyline[]
Season 1[]
In 1910, Rosaleen refused to speak and was in fear of one of the town's miners, the troubled alcoholic Wendell Backus. He once scared her because he was drunk and she didn't answer a question of his. He told Jack that it was probably because he raised his hand to hit the girl but stopped. It still scared her, even though he didn't follow through. Rosaleen went missing and was eventually found. It was discovered that she blamed herself for her father's death because she hadn't given him his lunch.
Season 2[]
Rosaleen continued as a student in Elizabeth’s classroom. She appeared in a class photo taken by Jack.[1]
Season 10[]
At some point, Rosaleen had left Hope Valley with no plans to return. Her many memories weighed on her. In 1920, Rosaleen was working as a nanny for a family in Cape Fullerton. She loved the children but the job was demanding and required her to work 6 1/2 days per week. She was trying to save up money to attend nursing school.
During a rare break from her nanny duties, Rosaleen returned to Hope Valley to visit her mother Molly. She surprised Elizabeth in the classroom with an apple and a book she’d borrowed long ago. Rosaleen told Elizabeth she could only stay a week because the family she nannied for was moving to Charleston, South Carolina.
Upon seeing Henry Gowen was still in town, Rosaleen angrily exclaimed that she couldn’t believe he was still there. Seeing him triggered memories of the mine disaster and how scared she’d been as a little girl. Molly tried to reassure her daughter, but she was still upset.
Henry decided to set up an anonymous scholarship for the students of Hope Valley so that he could help Rosaleen without her knowing it was him. During her stay in Hope Valley, Rosaleen spent time shadowing Faith at the Infirmary in order to gain medical experience. When she discovered Henry was behind the scholarship, she angrily rejected the money.
Eventually, Rosaleen came to realize Henry had changed and she needed to forgive him. She invited him to sit by her at the church during the choir performance. Later, she watched happily as he became Goldie’s godfather. Rosaleen decided to accept Henry’s scholarship and she enrolled in nursing school.
