Rosemary Coulter (née LeVeaux) is a main character in the Hallmark drama When Calls the Heart. She is portrayed by Pascale Hutton.
Background[]
Rosemary was solely raised by her father after the age of 5 due to her parents’ separation.[1] Rosemary knew Jack Thornton from a young age, as their fathers were Mounties together.[2] In her younger days, Rosemary was something of a sportswoman, shown to be an excellent shot.
Storyline[]
Season 1[]
In 1910, Rosemary made a dramatic entrance into Coal Valley, claiming to be Jack Thornton’s fiancée, even though she’d ended their engagement two years previously.[3]
Her attempts to rekindle her relationship with Jack were unsuccessful, as Jack could only see himself with Elizabeth. Though Rosemary was disappointed, she decided to stay in Hope Valley.
Season 2[]
In Season 2, she made it her mission to bring the theatrical arts to Hope Valley. She temporarily took over as a school teacher while Elizabeth was away tending to her family. She became interested in Leland Coulter (Lee) after his dramatic arrival via motorcycle in Hope Valley.
Season 3[]
Rosemary invited a reporter to come to Hope Valley to write an article about how the town celebrated New Year’s. She lied about being married and roped Lee into pretending to be her husband. Before the article was published, Lee confronted her about her lie and she confessed the truth to the reporter, who had already figured it out. Under Rosemary’s leadership, the town had a lovely New Year’s celebration complete with a Time Capsule, planting of a special tree, concert at the church, and fireworks at midnight.[4]
As Lee’s girlfriend, Rosemary wanted to be part of his whole life, including his work. She tried to redecorate his office. When she discovered Lee’s tab at the Mercantile was overdue, she worried about his financial situation and assumed his business was in trouble, when in fact he’d simply misplaced the bill and forgotten to pay it. When Lee injured his foot in a workplace accident, Rosemary took it upon herself to look after him until Faith arrived.
In the Season 3 finale, she and Lee were married.
Season 4[]
Rosemary learned to drive even as she and Lee learned how to navigate life as a married couple.
Season 5[]
Rosemary's friendship with Elizabeth grew and she went overboard planning Elizabeth and Jack's wedding.
Season 6[]
During the 1915 Christmas season, Rosemary worked alongside Abigail to present a special Christmas dinner for the town. She also was in charge of the Wishing Tree for that year, handing out ornaments to everyone in town to write their wishes on. Rosemary helped prepare the nursery at Elizabeth’s house for Jack’s arrival, along with other women in town. Rosemary, Abigail, and Elizabeth went to look for some meat for the town’s Christmas dinner and pick up a stroller Elizabeth had bought for her baby. They got caught in a snowstorm on the way home and had to seek shelter in a hunting cabin. Along with Abigail, Rosemary assisted Elizabeth when she went into labor and gave birth to Jack Jr. in the hunting cabin.
Rosemary kept busy by working at Dottie's dress shop. Living next door to Elizabeth and Jack was a constant reminder that Rosemary and Lee had yet to conceive a child. Seeing pregnant women in town and magazine advertisements for baby toiletries added to Rosemary's distress. She visited Dr. Shepherd for an exam; he told her she was in perfect health and advised that she discuss her concerns with Lee.[5]
Rosemary was finally able to share with Lee her feelings about wanting a child while they were babysitting Jack. Lee was understanding and empathized with her feelings. Later, she confided in Elizabeth that she didn't think she could have children. Rosemary and Lee agreed to become Jack's guardians, and Elizabeth told Rosemary that she'd make a great mother.[6]
Season 7[]
In spring 1917, Rosemary and Lee were planning a trip to Los Angeles. In quiet moments when Rosemary was alone, she still longed for a child, but managed to keep busy and not dwell on it too much. Unfortunately, a business meeting came up at the last minute for Lee, and the client was only able to meet during the week they were supposed to go on vacation. Lee was willing to forego the meeting, but Rosemary insisted they postpone their trip. In return, Lee planned a surprise showing at the saloon of Gloria Swanson's film, Teddy at the Throttle. [7]
Rosemary had ideas about the ideal location for Jesse and Clara's wedding, but the couple wanted something different. She came up with some designs for Clara's wedding dress, although her designs weren't quite what Clara had in mind. She and Lee babysat Jack while Elizabeth helped Nathan with Allie's first sleepover with her friends. Rosemary complained to Lee that nobody wanted to take her advice, but he helped her to realize she should wait for people to ask before she doles out advice. Ultimately, Rosemary realized she needed to let Jesse and Clara make their own decisions in regards to their wedding, and Clara asked her to be matron of honor.[8]
An outbreak of chicken pox went through the town, and since Rosemary hadn’t had the illness as a child, she came down with a serious case. At first, she felt okay, but then her fever spiked to 105 degrees and she became delirious. Carson and Faith used submersion therapy to reduce her fever. Eventually, Rosemary’s fever broke and she recovered.
Season 8[]
Rosemary and Lee arrived home a little early because they were homesick and Lee was seasick. They were clearly happy to see Elizabeth and Little Jack and to be home. Seeing Jesse and Clara are having trouble in their marriage, they come up them. Rosemary tells Clara to give him time to read. On the other hand, Lee comes up with a plan to help them bond, getting them a bicycle built for two! [9]
Rosemary helps Jesse and Clara
Rosemary noticing Clara was upset, tried to reach out to Clara to offer advice as Clara admitted that she didn't know what was wrong with Jesse as all he wanted was to be alone and to read. [9] Rosemary saw Clara adding pants to Dottie's Dress Shop's window. She commented that she hopes someday Clara might take over Dottie's Dress shop which surprises everyone. They all though she'd try to run it. [10] Rosemary later notices the new pantsuits are not selling. Just then Jess drives by on Lee's bike. Rosemary tells him, "Get off that thing. You have a wife to consider." [10]
Rosemary's friendship with Elizabeth
Rosemary and Elizabeth finally catch up and talk about Nathan and Lucas. Thanks to thinking Nathan was shot, Elizabeth admits to Rosemary that Nathan means more to her than she realized. [9] Elizabeth set up something special for her and Lee. She created a Hawaii based meal for them to enjoy. Rosemary loved it as did Lee and together they danced. Elizabeth also confides in Rosemary telling her that Lucas's dad left his mom. [11] Later on, Lucas mentioned to Rosemary that his mother seemed distant so he was planning to ask his father to come for a visit. Rosemary although nervous, handles it well saying "that would be a surprise". [11]
While spending time with Elizabeth, Elizabeth still insists there's something that Nathan isn't sharing with her. Rosemary shares that her job search isn't going well. She just wants to find something she is as excited about as she was the dress shop. [12] Rosemary and Elizabeth go for a walk. They discuss Florence and Ned's upcoming marriage and Nathan's late explanation as of how Jack's death took place. Rosemary reminds Elizabeth that Nathan probably felt it unimportant as he was not the blame for Jack's death. Upset Rosemary runs away in tears. [13] Trying to help Elizabeth, Rosemary talks to Nathan telling him how she used to have a crush on Jack and that it ended up hurting Elizabeth and Jack. She told Nathan this in hopes it would show Nathan how people can get hurt by other people's emotions and actions. [14] Elizabeth confronts Rosemary about what she said to Nathan in the library. She wonders if Rosemary encouraged Nathan's actions as he professed his love for Elizabeth again. Rosemary denies it saying she only wants what is best for Elizabeth. Elizabeth greatly upset says, "How do you even know what that is?" She asks Rosemary to leave. [13] At Ned and Florence's wedding, Elizabeth apologizes to Rosemary for how she has been treating her lately and would like to set aside their issues. Rosemary agrees saying, "people have their own ways of handling things." Things still are not good between them. [15]
Little Jack and the Chair
Rosemary finds herself babysitting little Jack. She enjoys her time with him. [11] Rosemary once again got to watch Little Jack. While she is watching Little Jack, he tries to sit into Lee's new chair that only he must sit in. Elizabeth then decides to sit in it and it breaks! Rosemary is honest and tells Lee who is not mad. He shares with her the reason why the chair meant so much to him. His grandfather was a woodworker. When he was 12, his grandfather and him built a chair just like that together. Lee admires his grandfather for selling things he made rather than just selling wood like him. Rosemary surprised Lee with a wood shop in their backyard. He was so happy. [16]
Rosemary is worried that Lee is still at the oil ring when it exploded but instead he is safely back in town. [17] Rosemary is worried that Lee is still at the oil ring when it exploded but instead he is safely back in town. Later on Lee insists on having his newly arrived chair in the perfect position before he can sit in it. It takes a while which Rosemary finds funny. Lee has removed his back brace to get ready for this moment but before he can sit, Jesse arrives to buy his motorbike. [10]
Lee and Rosemary do not trust Christopher, Henry's son as Rosemary puts it, "She is an actress and knows a show when she sees one." [18] So when she sees Rachel making plans to go see the town together, Rosemary offers a different time so Lee can take them. [19]
Rosemary Meeting Susannah and Helping Rachel
Rosemary meets Susannah who is Lee's sister and she also meets Rachel, Susannah's daughter. Rosemary shares with Elizabeth during a walk how strict Susannah is and how Rachel isn't allowed to do anything without Susannah "raining on her parade." Elizabeth admits that she is upset because she learned that Nathan was suspended while stationed in Fort Clay at the same time that her husband, Jack was there. It makes her wonder if there is more Nathan isn't telling her. [20] This happens again while she, Elizabeth and Lee had dinner with Rachel and Susannah. Rachel uses the slang word, "delish" and while Susannah reprimands her for not using the correct word, Lee and Rosemary think it's a great word to use. Rosemary boast about how wonderful things were on Broadway making Rachel wish to visit bigger cities instead of running her parents' furniture shop. [20]
Despite discussing with Lee how she feels that Susannah is smothering Rachel and having him say to back off, Rosemary decides to try to help Rachel while she is working part-time in the dress shop. She allows Rachel to choose her own outfit saying she should look the part. Rachel does and is so excited with the outfit she chose. When Susannah is upset at how Rachel looks, Rosemary interjects saying that Rachel is a natural but she is quickly dismissed by Susannah. Susannah thinks about everything and decides that Rachel should say with Lee and Rosemary as Bellingham is no place to raise a child. Rosemary eagerly agrees. Lee says, "What could go wrong? [20]
While caring for Rachel, Lee and Rosemary find a romance novel under her bed. As Lee reads it out loud, Rosemary blushes and laughs. [21] Rosemary and Lee find Rachel on the road in the woods. She got lost and is so happy to see them. [22] Rosemary learns they will get a break from parenting Rachel. She is to go back to Bellingham for her birthday. As Lee says, "Parenting a teenager is soo hard." [23]
Dottie's Dress Shop
Rachel is doing a wonderful job with the dress shop however Rosemary finds out that she plans to sell the shop. Rosemary is heartbroken as she wants to work despite Lee's assural they have enough money without Rosemary's income. [24] Come to find out, Lee offered to buy the shop for Rosemary but then realized she would have wanted to do that herself not him do it for her so he retracts his offer to buy her out. That made Dottie think about the option of selling the shop.[25] When Elizabeth stops by to get her dress altered by Rosemary, Elizabeth comments that she cannot imagine Rosemary not at Dottie's. Rosemary comments that it is time for her to do something new in her life. [21] Ultimately Rosemary does leave the shop and comments, "Fashion change and so must I" and that she wasn't sure what she will do now but "I cannot wait to find out." [26]
Rosemary returns to the dress shop to make Florence's wedding dress. Florence couldn't find the perfect dress so Rosemary and Clara were determined to make one for her. The dress they make is beautiful and even Lee compliments Rosemary on it. [27]
Rosemary's new careers
Rosemary having left the dress shop, was able to step in for Florence while Ned was recovering from surgery. She was a natural at handling phone calls and the mercantile. [28]
Rosemary takes it upon herself to try to track down the guy who stole Jesse and Clara's savings. She spread out a map on Lee's desk which annoys him. He moves it off his desk subtly but she unplugs his lamp so he leaves to go talk to Joseph annoyed. When Lee returns, Rosemary has taken over the office with plans to go see the Canfield cabin to talk to the guys who took Jesse and Clara's savings. She wanted Lee to join her but he declines. Rosemary finds the place empty. She rides around to find an officer who shots and scares her horse and Rosemary lands on the ground. She is slightly hurt despite his comment that no harm was intended but it was private property. He refused to tell her about the new owners so she left angry. Rosemary is tended to by Carson and Lee apologizes for not being there. Nathan is told about the Pickerson's. [29]
Rosemary goes back to Lee's office to learn that he has added her a desk to his office. She is excited and touched. She finally decided what she wants to do, open a newspaper! [30] Rosemary decides to call her newspaper, The Valley Voice receiving a thumbs up from Lee. [31] Lee admits he's jealous that Rosemary has figured out what she wants to do. To get her started, he helps her to set up a printing press. The next morning, Lee arrives with coffee and a copy of the morning newspaper, hers!! She is so excited and starts saying everything she needs to get done, hire more staff, get a better printing press and an office. Lee thought she might to get her own office but she corrects him, 'Our Office.' [31]
Lee excitedly goes into their office and starts to announce what he wants to do. Rosemary guesses, 'run for mayor?' Lee wants to know how she guessed. She merely smiled and said she had an nose for news. [31]
Season 9[]
Rosemary is doing well with The Valley Voice. Rosemary hires her husband, Lee as her Managing Editor of The Valley Voice. They share some moments as Lee writes stories for the newspaper. [32] Rosemary helps her friend, Elizabeth, to feel good about her book despite some mean reviews.[33] The two also bond having a girl's makeover night where Elizabeth turns out to look like Rosemary! [34]
Rosemary worries Lee has grown tired of her since they are spending so much time together. She even worries he has met someone knew but instead discovers Lee has written her a love poem and made her a chair. He wants to be sure they spend time outside the office. [35]
After Lee writes some editorials about the mayor, Mike Hickam, both learn some powerful lessons on the power of press. [36] They proved to really have learned their lesson as when it came time to print a story about Henry, after he asked them not to, they agreed never to publish it. [37]
Rosemary finds out from Faith that she might be pregnant from Faith after she gets bouts of nausea thinking she has the flu. She decides she will not tell Lee until she is sure not wanting to hurt him. [38] Rosemary tells Elizabeth in confidence that she might be pregnant and Elizabeth is happy for her. [39] She worries about this for quite a while even going to visit Faith at the infirmary to find out the signs of how she will know. Faith mentions that she will feel the baby move by feeling flutters. Rosemary discovers that she was pregnant. This caused excitement through Hope Valley, mostly for Lee. [40]
Season 10[]
By 1920, Rosemary was in the midst of a healthy pregnancy while continuing to run The Valley Voice. Elizabeth asked Rosemary to be her matron of honor for her wedding to Lucas, which Rosemary happily accepted.[41]
When Lee was trying to secure a big contract for the lumber mill that would be an economic boost for the town, Rosemary interrupted the meeting, using her charm to influence the man to sign a two-year deal with the lumber company. She also served as support and confidant for Elizabeth during her sister Julie and Aunt Agatha’s visit. In a vulnerable moment, Rosemary confided to Elizabeth that she wondered if she could be a good mother since her own mother had left her and her father when she was young.[42]
As Rosemary’s due date approached, her excitement and nervousness grew. This caused her to try to micromanage every detail of her baby shower. Meanwhile, she and Lee also worked on preparing the nursery. The women in town threw Rosemary a surprise baby shower. They also gave her an afternoon of pampering and relaxation at the barbershop. During the shower, the women said encouraging things to Rosemary about how she would be as a mother, Lee surprised Rosemary with a handcrafted rocker and cradle he and Joseph had made together.[43]
Rosemary gave birth to a healthy baby girl.[44] She was supported in labor by Elizabeth, Faith, and Lee. The town held a candlelight vigil until the baby safely arrived. The couple had difficulty choosing a name for the baby until Rosemary was able to come to better terms with the loss of her mother. After going through a trunk full of letters her late mother had left for her, Rosemary ultimately decided to name her daughter after her mother, giving her the name Marigold Elizabeth Coulter, or Goldie for short.
The letters revealed that Goldie LeVeaux had loved her daughter very much, but she and her husband had separated when Rosemary was 5. He was awarded sole custody, and after he was transferred, Goldie wasn’t allowed to visit. She had written to Rosemary every year on her birthday, and Rosemary’s father had kept the letters a secret. Goldie had intended to see Rosemary for her 18th birthday, but passed away before that time came. Rosemary was given the trunk that contained the letters and photo after her father died, sometime between 1918 and 1920. [45]
After recovering from childbirth, Rosemary went back to running The Valley Voice with baby Goldie in tow. She was instrumental in bringing Governor Balfour to Hope Valley, but had made extravagant promises in the process. After Balfour’s true intentions were revealed, she worked with Lucas, Nathan, Bill, Lee, and Elizabeth to expose him.
She wrote an article about Lucas after his radio speech which exposed Governor Balfour’s corruption. Rosemary visited Elizabeth’s house late one night after seeing her light on, during which time Elizabeth admitted she wasn’t sure about marrying Lucas. Rosemary assured Elizabeth of her support, no matter what. Rosemary served as a poll worker alongside Elizabeth on Election Day.
Rosemary and Lee asked Henry Gowen to be Goldie’s godfather, which he eventually accepted after some hesitation. This came after Henry had bonded with Goldie while serving as impromptu babysitter. Elizabeth was named as Goldie’s godmother. Pastor Joseph Canfield officiated Goldie’s christening in late October 1920, possibly Halloween.
