When Calls The Heart is a Hallmark television show set in the Western Frontier of Canada during the early 20th Century. It is based on Janette Oke's Canadian West book series.
The TV show follows Elizabeth Thatcher, a young woman raised in high-society Hamilton. Dreaming to teach children, despite her wealthy family's wishes, Elizabeth receives her first job in Hope Valley formerly known as Coal Valley, a small Canadian coal-mining town in the West. The town is still recovering from a recent coal mining disaster that has claimed the lives of most of the town's miners.
Life in the frontier is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women find that their faith is being tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads.
Elizabeth charms most of everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he is assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own.
It is now a hit drama on Hallmark channel and showing on Netflix. The show has been running for 10 seasons as of 2023.
