Synopsis[]
The TV series begins in 1910 and follows Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young woman raised in high-society Hamilton. Dreaming to teach children, despite her wealthy family's wishes, Elizabeth receives her first job in Coal Valley, a small coal-mining town in the West. The town is still recovering from a recent coal mining disaster that has claimed the lives of most of the town's miners.
Life in the frontier is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a woman whose husband, the foreman of the mine, has just been killed in an explosion along with a dozen other miners. The newly widowed women find that their faith is being tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads. Elizabeth charms nearly everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father, a shipping magnate, has doomed his career by asking him to protect his daughter in Coal Valley (later renamed to Hope Valley). Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own.
As time passes, Elizabeth becomes an integrated and valued member of the Hope Valley community while her relationship with Jack deepens. They celebrate their wedding, but their domestic bliss is short-lived when Jack is killed in an accident. After Elizabeth is widowed, she must be strong for her son, Jack Jr., despite her grief. Her path to love again after heartbreak is anything but smooth, but she makes her way forward with the support of her community, who not only support her through her grief journey, but also stay by her side when Jack Jr. is diagnosed with diabetes. This diagnosis alters the lives of Elizabeth and her son forever, and requires a temporary move to Cape Fullerton at the end of Season 12.

When Calls the Heart premiered on January 11, 2014 on Hallmark Channel. The series airs Sunday evenings on Hallmark Channel and streams the next day on Hallmark+.
On March 23, 2025, during the airing of the Season 12 finale, Hallmark announced that When Calls the Heart would return for Season 13 in 2026.
